PAULETTE CROWTHER Obituary

CROWTHER--Paulette Isabel 53, vivacious and devoted mother, sister, daughter, partner and friend, landscape designer and public relations director, passed away at her home in New York on April 5, 2010, in the arms of her loved ones, after a two-year battle with cancer. Born in 1956 to John and Ginette Crowther, Paulette spent her formative years in Montclair, NJ, as the eldest girl and second of seven children. She spent her summers in Westhampton and Rhode Island, where she cultivated her love of nature and passion for the ocean. She graduated from Barnard College in 1978 with a B.A. in English Literature. The artistic and cultural vibrancy of New York City immediately captured her; she lived there the rest of her life. She applied her gifts for language and communication to a career in public relations and graphic design at Rockefeller University, the YWCA and Cardozo Law School. In 1983, Paulette married Carlos Almada, with whom she had three children, Justine, Tristan, and Camille. She nurtured them selflessly, ensuring that they were enriched by fine education, joy and boundless love. They always will be inspired by her kindness, curiosity and lust for life, no matter the circumstance. She enjoyed many wonderful years with her fiance, Bill Wunder, who shared her passions for nature, cooking, music and travel. Her wanderlust led her to many exotic lands, where she indulged her fascination with history, culture and natural beauty. Paulette was diagnosed with advanced cancer in March 2008. Graced with incredible tenacity in the face of extreme adversity, she endured months of arduous treatments while retaining her signature smile, flare and zeal. During the last year of her life, she fulfilled a longtime dream and enrolled in the Master of Science in Landscape Design program at Columbia University. She immersed herself in her projects, often studying into the night, even while working full-time, adhering to a disciplined regimen of exercise, healthful eating and meditation, and never missing a beat as a stellar mother and committed friend. Our lives are and will always be enriched by Paulette's bright light.

I heard that Paulette passed this evening and my heart breaks at the loss of a beautiful soul. I remember her as a devoted mom to her 3 beautiful children. I had the pleasure of doing her hair a few times over the years and was always impressed by her sweetness and beauty. She and her children will be in my prayers...... Ivy Lappin

To Justine, Tristan and Camille,
Oh the stories of "rap sessions" in the young adult religious ed program at Immaculate in Montclair. Getting there and back with Hugh at the wheel were even more interesting. I shared a lot of laughs with your mom at Kimberley - she was phemom and a force of nature.

To Justine, Tristan, and Camille; How lucky you are to have had Paulette as your mother. She took such joy in raising you and was always so proud of you. I marveled at her maturity) and playfulness and always hoped to be able to raise children as she did. Her light lives on and we all have soaked it up - and will try to give as generously as she did. Love to you all, Tonia and Paul Barringer and family

To Paulette's children,
How often we thought of you after moving to upstate New york from Tribeca many years ago. We were on Duane street on your corner and the kids (Martine and Camille) played together a lot..and Agi too! I always was in awe of how much Paulette could do and her gutsy , funny ,classy intelligent way of raising her family.
A mother like that is so exceptional.
I heard a song on the radio a few that the girls used to sing and remembered everyone so fondly. Your family always sounded wonderful so I'm sure you are in loving hands. All our love to you Camille, Justine and Tristan.

Paulette was my very best friend in elementary school. I spent several wonderful vacations with the Crowther family in Rhode Island and Westhampton.Haven't talked to Paulette since we left for college, but I have thought of her often. I am so sorry for your loss and my thoughts are with you.

There will never again be anything like seeing your smiling face and lilting walk as we came toward each other to meet. I will miss you forever.
