SCHWARTZ--Meryl, cherished wife of Jeffrey Salat, devoted daughter of Ann Schwartz and the late Robert Schwartz, loving sister and sister-in-law of Laura Schwartz, Michael Caruso, Melissa Schwartz and David Muenzer, beloved aunt of Benjamin and Emily Schwartz Muenzer, and niece of Wendy and Steven Gelman and Barnett Rukin, passed away at home surrounded by her family on January 20, 2011. A strong, loving woman, she was deeply devoted to her family and friends, and will always be remembered for her thoughtfulness and caring. A gifted and passionate educator, Meryl changed the lives of hundreds of children with learning disabilities as the Elementary School Principal of The Churchill School and Center in Manhattan, and earlier, as a teacher at The Lab School of Washington, D.C. Treating each child as an individual, she found their special strengths and taught them to believe in themselves. To honor her memory and continue her legacy, donations may be made to The Meryl Schwartz Fund for Special Activities at The Churchill School and Center. The Fund will provide financial assistance to families to ensure all children are able to participate in special school activities that Meryl believed fostered a love of school and promoted the children's social development. Services will be held at Sinai Chapels, 162-05 Horace Harding Expressway, Fresh Meadows, January 23, 2011 at 11:30am, interment thereafter at Mount Ararat Cemetery, Route 109, Farmingdale, NY.
