MERENDA--Joseph J. DVM., died July 13th, 2011 at age 98 in Las Vegas, NV. A 1934 graduate of the Veterinary College at Cornell University, he was an early practitioner of small animal medicine at the Zepp Clinic on West 53rd Street, Manhattan, NY. In a 2007 interview with Dr. Donald F. Smith of Cornell, Dr. Merenda described his career from its beginnings as a college freshman through the years of developing methods and instruments for this nascent specialty. He was always proud of his education at Cornell, attending many reunions, including his 75th in 2009. Dr. Merenda was a U.S. Army Reservist called to active duty during World War II. He served at several U.S. military installations and was active in the Army War Dogs program, retiring in 1972 as a Lt. Colonel. He was born August 19, 1912, in Newark, NJ, grew up on Long Island and lived most of his life in Brooklyn, NY. His wife, Dorothy A. Tedtsen, predeceased him. He is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Janowsky of Las Vegas, NV, his son, Joseph Merenda, Jr. of Rockville, MD, two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.
