ROBERT FREHSE Obituary

FREHSE--Robert M., Jr., The Rockefeller University mourns the passing of our longtime friend Robert Frehse, who served for nearly three decades as executive director of the Hearst Foundations. A guiding light in New York's philanthropic community, Bob will be remembered for his wise leadership and his dedication to many causes, including medical research and education. At Rockefeller, he was instrumental in creating the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship Fund for the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program, which the University sponsors with its neighbors, Weill Cornell Medical College and the Sloan-Kettering Institute. The mission of this nationally renowned program is to train physician-scientists who are able to bridge the gap between laboratory research and clinical medicine. Over the past 20 years, the Hearst Scholarship has supported ten physician-scientists in training. Bob loved young people and believed strongly in investing in our future scientific leaders. He also fostered inter-institutional ties, bringing together faculty and administrators in a common purpose. With everlasting gratitude to Bob, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to his beloved wife, Dale; to their sons, Robert M. Frehse, III, and John W. Frehse, Sr., and to the entire Frehse family. Russell L. Carson, Chair Marc Tessier-Lavigne, President Paul Nurse and Torsten N. Wiesel, Presidents Emeriti Olaf Andersen, Director, Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program Marnie Imhoff, Vice President

I fondly remember singing in the choir at the Bronxville Reformed Church and the way he would "check-in
" with me. It was lovely that he noticed me and cared as I was on much younger and wasn't really in his immediate circle.

Bob was truly "one of a kind" and a very generous and giving person on all levels. I enjoyed working with him through the Hearst Foundations over a 15 year period, particularly when I worked at Independent Sector. He will be missed by many people and contributed significantly to the nation and nonprofit organizations.
