As he expressed in his book, Reviewing the Years, where my father set down his memories for his children and grandchildren, "[The] feeling of security and of being trusted by those one loves is the greatest gift that parents can give a child." My father also fostered the deep importance of faithfulness, fairness, and honesty to his family.

That being said, among my father's many remarkable accomplishments, perhaps his single greatest achievement was in providing unconditional love and support to each and every member of his family. I thank him for that bountiful gift and for setting such an exemplary example as both a father and a grandfather. I shall greatly miss my father, his infinite wisdom, sensitivity and kindness. His deep abiding love will live on in the hearts and prayers of his family always.

David S. Smith was a unique individual who lived his values every day with personal behaviors to match them. Not mentioned in the NYT Obituary are three interesting achievements that were part of Ambassador Smith's leadership "legecy:" under his leadership the Airforce Academy became reality, he helped rewrite the US Military Code of Conduct after Korean War and he lead successfully the development of a program for "Advanced Graduate Studies" for promising young Military Officers.
