HENRY KAPLAN Obituary

KAPLAN--Henry Paul, MD, JD, died on September 9, 2012 at home in Saratoga, CA, age 77, of melanoma. Henry was a devoted husband and father and beloved grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Marcia Orol Kaplan and sons Joshua (Stefanie Fox), Seth (Kari Danziger), Daniel (Lyn Katzman) and Jonathan (Suzanne Heald); eight grandchildren; and brother M. Howard Kaplan (Joyce Gumbiner). Predeceased by one grandson. Henry was born April 17, 1935 in Brooklyn, NY to Louis and Rose Steigman Kaplan. He graduated from Erasmus High School, the College of William Mary in 1956, Harvard Law School in 1959, and Downstate Medical Center - Brooklyn in 1965. Henry practiced medicine at the San Jose Medical Group until 1990, then as its general counsel until 2001. He retired from private law practice in 2007. Henry authored numerous publications, recently blogging on health care, and was a frequent speaker on medical and legal topics. Henry was a strong supporter of Israel and Jewish causes. His interest in the history of Kohanim and his family through genetic genealogy inspired him to locate "cousins" around the world. He also was an accomplished woodworker of furniture and toys for his grandchildren.

I was a patient of Dr. Kaplan when he was at Sam Jose Medical Clinic. He set the bar for me and I was never able to find another doctor who came close to his ability to connect with patients, his compassion, his willingness to spend as much time as needed to find out what he needed to know. I made an appointment with him because I had a broken heart. That was in the early 80s and I have never forgotten his wise words that got me through it. My heart and thoughts go out to his family.

I met Henry at a Conference for DNA Project administrators several years ago. I knew nothing of his background, only that he was interested in genetic genealogy. He was very gracious and unassuming and most interesting to talk to. I looked for him at later conferences and am greatly saddened to learn of his death. Those of us who knew him from the genetic genealogy community miss him.

Besides being amicable and quick witted, Henry was always willing to share his expertise to help fellow genealogists along their ways. My condolences to Marcia, and his sons. His memory will be for a blessing.

A truly remarkable man who was intellectually honest, loathfull of corruption, full of humor, warmth, understanding, humanity and curiousity. He was unyielding in his allegiance to family and friends and principles.
