I met Elfie at what we laughingly called, "Shakespeare Summer Camp," in 1990 in the Berkshires with Shakespeare and Compnay. I was at the beginning of my career as an English teacher and she was an inspiring and compassionate mentor. Later on, when I started a high school in Boston, I used her materials on teaching AP English to help get our neediest students to achieve beyond everyone's expectations. I just learned of her passing when I Googled the AP book. My sincerest condolences to your family.

I had the privilege of learning from "Dr. Elfie" at an AP summer workshop in 2012. Needless to say, the impacts she had on me as a teacher are beyond words. Ultimately, she is the reason my students have more than tripled the passing rate at my school over the past three years. She is the inspiration behind every lesson I deliver. Thus, when I was flipping through my old notes and came across her name, I decided to seek her out to let her know much much she had impacted me as a teacher. I was beyond words when my initial search led me to this obituary.
Dr. Elfie, you are sorely missed. You continue to touch lives, especially mine. I am humbled and blessed for having the opportunity to learn from such a dynamic, insightful, and charismatic woman.

I'm so sorry to hear of Elfie's passing. She was an excellent teacher & inspired me to also become an educator! I had her for 2 years in English AP at Nova & graduated in 1991. She's my favorite teacher!!

I was just thinking about her today and happened stumble upon this article just a few hours later. How very sad. I can directly attribute specific moments in her class at Nova (88) to my success as an English major, writer and teacher. She will not be forgotten.

Elfie was a teacher, mentor, and influence in my life for over twenty years. When I graduated from the role of being her student, I became Elfie's friend. I will miss her regular emails and updates; memorable visits in both New York and Florida; and ongoing dialogues about life, literature, and just plain gossip. Elfie made my life glow, and I will never forget her words of encouragement, empowerment, and friendship.
