BEAUJOUR--Michel. The French Department and the Center for French Civilization and Culture of New York University are deeply saddened by the death of our longtime colleague and friend, Professor Michel Beaujour, one of the most eminent figures in the field of French literature. In his 46 years in our department, Michel played a key role in bringing it to the nation's top rungs, and by co-founding our innovative Institute of French Studies, he helped open new directions for the study of French. His wise counsel, usually dosed with irony and wit, helped carry us forward and upward. No one worked harder with students and no professor was more appreciated by them than he. In recent years, his great academic contributions were complemented by his most generous support for fellowships. Michel Beaujour cannot be replaced in our department but his spirit and his intellectual legacy will remain with us. Our heartfelt condolences go to his dear wife, Elizabeth, to his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Maria McKenna, and to his family in France.
