BERTRAM MOLL Obituary

MOLL--Bertram Daniel, on May 11, 2013, Bertram Daniel Moll, known to many for his kindness, compassion, and profound devotion to his wife Nessa, died peacefully in San Diego, California. The cause was complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 87. Bert was born in Brooklyn, New York to Nathan and Bella Moll, immigrants from Eastern Europe. He attended Erasmus High, NYU, and Harvard Law School. During World War II, he served as a sergeant in the Army, stationed in the Philippines. Married to Nessa Ernstoff Moll for 55 years, they settled first in Rockville Centre and then Port Washington, both on Long Island. They later moved to Greenwich Village, Farmington Woods in Avon, Connecticut and then San Diego. Bert and Nessa shared a passion for politics, movies, theatre, The New York Times' Crossword, international travel, classical music and chocolate. Bert joined the Legal Department at Long Island Lighting Company and appeared on its behalf in the United States Supreme Court. He later joined Con Edison's Legal Department and subsequently moved into a business role as a Vice President, assuming responsibility for Con Ed's oil and then gas supply. He was dedicated to the communities in which he lived, serving on the school board and as a board member of Group House for troubled teens in Port Washington. Bert also served as a law guardian in the Nassau County Family Court. In Farmington Woods, he served on the Boards of the Home Owner's Association and Tax District. Bert was an ardent sports fan and had a love-hate relationship with the Yankees, Knicks and Jets. He enjoyed playing tennis and golf and could swish a set shot from 25 feet with admirable consistency. Bert's integrity, generosity and devotion to wife and family were an inspiration to all who knew him and will never be forgotten. In addition to Nessa, Bert is survived by his son Steve and his wife, Rhonda, daughter Laura and her husband, Dave, and daughter Julie and her husband Nick, as well as by grandchildren Karly and Nina, Evan and Jeremy, and Nate, Owen and Ben. Bert was predeceased by his parents and his brother Arthur. Contributions in Bert's memory can be made to Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, 8950 Villa La Jolla Drive Suite C129, La Jolla, CA 92037.

Nessa,
I'm saddened at the news of Bert's passing. My prayers are with you. Bert was one of the good guys at Con Edison. Even before I knew him I was intrigued by what he said in a Q&A in Con Edison's Around the System magazine. When asked what he always wanted to be Bert said as a kid he wanted to be "a three sewer guy" (any guy from Brooklyn knew that he was referring to hitting a long balll in street stickball). From that time on he was my idol.
