WARNER R. SCHILLING

SCHILLING--Warner R., died October 20, 2013, at age 88 at Englewood Hospital, Englewood, NJ. A long-time resident of Leonia, NJ, he grew up in the greater St. Louis area, served as a radio operator with the U.S. Army Air Forces, 194346, earned B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Yale, and became an enthusiastic traveler on five continents. The James T. Shotwell Professor of International Relations Emeritus at Columbia University, he was director of the university's Institute of War and Peace Studies, 197686. For more than fifty years he guided several generations of students through the intricacies of American foreign policy, the causes of war, nuclear strategy, and the influence of technology on war and international relations. Beloved father of Jonathan and Frederick, father-in-law of Elaine, grandfather of Jeremy, uncle of Pauline and Alice, great-uncle of Gracie, Jimmy, and Billy.
