ALPHONSE NORMANDIA Obituary

NORMANDIA--Alphonse, (1928-2013), 85, of Glen Cove, NY and previously NYC, died peacefully in his sleep on Monday morning, December 2. He is survived by children Lynne, Karen, Camille, Paul and Mary; granddaughter Phoebe; siblings Robert and Caroline Dodaro and many nieces and nephews. A beloved father, friend and member of the BBDO community, Alphonse worked in the BBDO Art Department for 59 years, collaborating with many of the agency's major clients. A graduate of Cooper Union, Alphonse was one of the original designers of the TV storyboard. He was also the illustrator for BBDO's alumni newsletter, "The Pink Sheet," for 30+ years. Alphonse was best known for his unique ability to make people laugh. He is the subject of a blog created by longtime friend Tom Villante, called "Me and Alphonse," which has been shared among hundreds of fans for years. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson's Foundation in Alphonse's memory would be appreciated. A life celebration for Alphonse will be held in NYC in Spring 2014. Alphonse will forever be a member of the BBDO "Hall of Fame." A bronze bust was made in his honor and all are encouraged to rub his nose for good luck. Rest in peace, Alphonse. Your loving friends at BBDO.

Alphonse considered the guys around him as his flock - and always - even years later was interested in what they did and helped them if he could. He always called my stay at BBDO as an earn as you learn summer job. But kept in touch. A true friend. A giant space is missing in the cosmos.

There are many reasons I'm glad I fell into BBDO back in 1968, fresh from school. Way up on that list is Alphonse, a man so unlike anyone life had prepared me for to date. I couldn't draw stick people. He was an artist. I was often full of myself. He was a study in genuine modesty. I found him quiet, yet capable of astounding clarity and insight. And, yes, he was funny. Really funny. I am saddened by his loss but grateful to have some of his work on my wall, even now.

Alphonse, loveable, clever, humble, hilarious. I remember days spent on the North Fork, Montauk on the beach, bird watching at Jones Beach, seeing Marcel Marceau. I first saw Alphonse when Maryann and Frank drove him to LI, opened their car trunk and said, "Here's your date"! It was fun from then on. RIP Alphonse. Condolences to his children and sister.

I had the privilege of working with Alphonse during my time as an illustrator at Gem Studio. He will always be remembered for being a truly great and original artist and storyteller.

Al had a great wit and was a wonderful guy to work for.
With a gleam in his eye, he could find humor where others couldn't.

Thank you Alphonse!

Alphonse was a true character, an original. Whenever BBDO comes up in a conversation, it is Alphonse that fills the stories. My sincere condolences to his family, thank you for sharing him.
