NANCY SHORT Obituary

SHORT--Nancy Jean Fulop, 72, On Monday, January 20, 2014, Nancy Jean Fulop Short died unexpectedly at New York Hospital after a long fight with the side effects and complications resulting from the re-emergence of thyroid cancer. Born on January 5, 1942, she was the only child of George Edward Fulop and Elizabeth Helen (Meruse) Fulop. Nancy was raised in Toledo, Ohio, first in its Birmingham neighborhood until her family moved to the Point Place neighborhood in the late 1940s. Eventually, she moved to New York City to practice law and into Lincoln Plaza Tower, an apartment building overlooking Lincoln Center and Central Park, where she lived from 1976 until her death. She was the wife of William P. Short III, whom she married in 1978, and the mother of Bradford W. Short, who was born in 1979. Both survive her. Until she became ill, she was an active member of the Certificate of Appropriateness Committee of Landmark West as well as of her building's co-op board. She was a parishioner of the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, where she also served as a lector. She was especially fond of reading at the Easter Vigil and Christmas Eve Masses. After she retired, she was a student at the New York School of Interior Design ("NYSID"), where she was pursuing an associate degree in interior design. Her hope was to graduate from NYSID and work in the interior design industry. Nancy worked for Bowne & Co. Inc., first as Editor of its Legal Publishing Division from 1997 to early 2003 and then as Editor of Bowne's securities compliance resource, SecuritiesConnect, from 2003 to late 2005. Before working at Bowne, she was Publications Manager of securities publications at Matthew Bender. Nancy had more than 30 years experience in securities law. She practiced as a corporate and securities attorney in New York for ten years at Skadden, Burns Summit and Warshaw Burstein and as an assistant professor of corporate finance and securities law at Rutgers School of Law-Camden for four years. She was awarded a J.D. degree from The University of Toledo - College of Law, where she was first in her class, and an LL.M. degree from Yale Law School. She was a graduate of St. Ursula Academy and Mary Manse College, both located in Toledo. She was valedictorian of her class at St. Ursula and was awarded the Bishop's Cross. At Mary Manse College, she graduated summa cum laude. Nancy taught high school art as well as English literature in the Toledo school system before starting her legal career. There will be a viewing on Monday, February 3, 2014 from 2:00-5:00pm followed by an evening viewing from 7:00-9:00pm at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home, at 81st and Madison Avenue, New York, New York. A funeral mass will be held at noon, Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola at 84th and Park Avenue, New York, New York. Following the service, interment will be at (First) Calvary Cemetery, Queens, New York. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make memorial contributions to Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University or NYSID, where an academic prize will be created for lawyers who leave the legal profession to pursue studies in interior design. Additional information on each program may be obtained by e-mailing [email protected] or [email protected], respectively, using Nancy Short in the subject line.

Nancy and I lived across the street from each other in Point Place on 121st street. Her mom often arranged play dates where Nancy & I did science projects and demonstrations together. I am sorry to hear that she is gone. John Beddoes

Nancy was a friend and classmate for four years at St. Ursula Academy in Toledo. It was clear to us all that, even as a teenager, Nancy was exceptionally gifted, bright and creative . . . and at all times gracious. I can still see her looking so pert and pretty in the legendary SUA uniforms of the 1950s! Thoughts and prayers are with you.

I worked with Nancy at Bowne for several years. She was a gifted and knowledgeable legal and compliance guru who helped all of us marketing types stay out of hot water. Thanks for that, Nancy! We'll miss you and your dry sense of humor. It was a pleasure knowing you and working with you. Rest in peace, Nancy...

My condolences on Nancy's passing. Nancy's dad and my dad were cousins, so I'd known Nancy since childhood. I recently came across a photo of her and myself at the ages of about 2 & 3 years old. I always knew her as a very bright person, and knew she would have a great future. Again, my sympathy goes out to you.

Nancy and I were high school friends at St. Ursula Academy in Toledo. Our lives took separate paths, but I always knew she would make a significant contribution in her chosen field. I am an artist; so happy to learn that her love of art and design took root. I remember her as a beautiful, considerate, and intelligent young woman.

We are saddened with the loss of this very bright and engaging woman. Nancy had been a member of our book club at Lincoln Plaza Tower for several years. The contribution of her insights and views were always thoughtful and intelligent. In addition, Nancy was an original tenant in the building and a hardworking and tireless Board member with our interests always at heart.
