ALISTAIR HANNA Obituary

HANNA--Alistair Matthew. Alistair Matthew Hanna, 69, of Manhattan and Lawrence, NY, died on July 12, 2014, of cancer. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1945, Ali earned a B.Sc in Physics in 1968 and a Ph.D in Nuclear Physics in 1972, both from Queen's University, Belfast. In 1974, he received an MBA from Harvard Business School and joined McKinsey & Company where he became a Director and served as Managing Partner of the Stamford Office. Ali led the Firm's microelectronics and software practices and was a leader in the telecommunications and aerospace groups. Since retiring from McKinsey in 1997, Ali founded the non-profit organization, Alpha North America which offers the Alpha Course to churches in the U.S. to help them bring people to faith in Christ. In 2004, he brought Alpha to Latin America. With his wife, Nancy, he owned and operated Ardtara Country House Hotel in Upperlands, Northern Ireland. With partners, he was developing Bushmills Dunes Golf Resort outside Bushmills, Northern Ireland. Bushmill Dunes was the culmination of a life dream, combining Ali's passions for golf and for the people of Northern Ireland. Ali also served on the Boards of Fountain House, New York City; Trinity Church Wall Street; and Queen's University Foundation. He was president of U.S. Friends of Queen's. Beyond Ali's many professional contributions, Ali inspired and warmed almost every one he met. His kindness and love of life, his Irish way and humor, his respect for people and his deep faith and humility -- these characteristics, coupled with Ali's brilliance and perseverance, made him one of a kind. Ali was for so many a dear and loyal friend and to his family, a beloved and devoted husband, father, brother and uncle. Ali is survived by his wife, the Reverend Nancy W. Hanna, and her daughter, Anne Warner Lee (Hocheong Lee); his brother, David Hanna (Linda), and their children, Paul (Whitney) and Patricia (Neil). The funeral will be on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at 1pm at St. Bartholomew's Church, 325 Park Avenue (51st Street). In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alistair Matthew Hanna can be made online to Alpha Latin America at www.alphausa.org/alihanna or to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) at www.curemeso.org/ donations (select Tribute Wall option).

Nancy
So sorry to hear of Ali's passing. He was so much apart of St. Bart's during your time there on staff. His warmth, generosity and deep faith made him a gift to be around.
Know that you and your family will be in my prayer.

Dearest Nancy and Family,
I was so sad to hear of Ali's passing. I am so grateful to Ali and you for the support and love you have given Jacob and Melina. Ali was very instrumental in Jacob's professional and spiritual growth. I will remember the first I met both of you and thought of what warm and spirit filled couple you are. May God's peace and love comfort you and Ann.
Sincerely, Alicia Moises (Melina's aunt)

Dear Nancy,
I first met Ali on 9/11 as he made his way to a meeting at CPG still reeling from his proximaty to the towers. His warmth, intelligence and sense of humor made all feel as though they were his friends. My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Ardtara and playing Royal Portrush so his love of that country is easy to understand. I am privleged to have known him...even briefly.

Dear Nancy,
I can remember Ali and I plotting the strategy of the future of wireless telecommunications in the Christ Church parking lot. It was really Ali but he always made me feel as if I was the genius. He had that way with people. You know, to make you feel big, brave, tall, smart, proud. Your dear Ali made everyone feel loved, important, and inspired "to break the chains that bind". He always held you up as his first love despite how hard he worked. I will never, ever, ever, smile, wink, or laugh till I cry without knowing Ali is there watching over us all, waiting patiently to buy a round of heavenly drinks for us all.
My heart breaks. Both love and loss plumb unfathomable and immeasurable depths. Prayers and love to you and Ann, Always, "Pirro"

Dear Nancy and family, I was so sorry to hear of Ali's passing. He was a truly remarkable man, and you two made a wonderful, inspiring couple. Ali was always a great sounding board and his advice was extremely well thought out and very foresighted. He did remarkable work for Queen's and Northern Ireland in general. I'm sure he is up there someplace smiling broadly as he watched Rory McIlroy win The British Open yesterday.......I will miss him a great deal, his sense of humor, his "Irishness" and his willingness to be a very "humble" leader.....one, who many of us looked up to.

Much Love,
John and Debbie O'Donoghue

Dear Nancy,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I will always cherish memories of You and Ali. His brilliance and humor made him at once approachable and admirable, and I'll never have a boss I like quite as much.

Dear Nancy: Our hearts go out to you at this time. Ali was such a remarkable fellow and it was a privilege to meet such a great witness for Christ. He loved you so much and you two were a great team for The Kingdom. I know our Lord is saying to him, 'Well done good and faithful servant...' May the Lord give you strength and peace at this sad time.

Nancy,
Our hearts ache with you as we remember the wonderful times we had with both of you. Ali makes our future homecoming just a little bit sweeter. But until then we weep with those who are weeping.
All our love, Roger & Sandy Wilkin
