Chris Evans Obituary

1952 - 2014
Christopher Peter Evans February 16, 1952 - July 18, 2014

Chris Evans, long time resident of Hastings-on-Hudson, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 18th at the Hospice of St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, at the age of 62. In his final days he was surrounded by loving family and friends.

Chris is survived by his father, John Evans; his son, Lucas Evans; his former wife, Jane Evans; his brothers, Richard and Matthew; his sister, Ione Evans; his sisters-in-law Heidi, and Sue Evans; his dear cousin, Denise Alexiades; his aunt Anita; nieces, Danielle, Alicia and Katherine, and nephews, Michael, John and Connor.

In elementary school, Chris was already known for the breadth of his knowledge. His schoolmates were happy to pay 10¢ for answers to any and all questions, under the auspices of The-Evs-Knows-All Club, of which Chris was the founding president. He went on to attend Eastside High School in Paterson, New Jersey, and to graduate from the University of Hartford in Connecticut. Always an enthusiastic athlete, he played football and tennis during high school and college.

Chris was a preeminent manager and true visionary of the New York New Wave music movement – a highly respected participant in a vibrant scene that included Blondie and Talking Heads. His musical grasp combined with his solid experience in the industry helped propel New York City into the vanguard of global music. Bands and musicians including Mink Deville, Jah Malla, Smash Palace, The Vels, David Drew, Sam Bisbee and Dog Eat Dog benefited from Chris's management and mentoring.

In later years, Chris became an integral part of the Hastings-on-Hudson community. He was a member of the Hastings Volunteer Fire Department, and served as a democratic district leader. Chris had an incisive mind, a wide-ranging intellect and an eagerness to foster political engagement in the village.

Chris was instrumental in founding the Minor League Division of the Little League for Hastings and was the President of the Hastings on Hudson Little League from 1996-2001. He will be remembered by a generation of Hastings families for his passionate advocacy for and nurturing of young athletes.

Chris was a devoted father to Lucas, instilling in him a commitment to critical thinking, a kind heart as well as a love for the Yankees and Giants.

As a practicing Buddhist, Chris asked that family and friends participate in the Ceremony of Sukhavati. The formal ceremony is brief, inviting, and clear. The ceremony will be followed by a reception at the same location.

I never knew Chris but I loved the line in his obit about his "Evs-Knows-All Club and so I added the obit to my collection at http://ninalentinislifewithoutend.blogspot.com/, where he is among good company. My condolences to his family and friends.

Chris,
Forever in my heart, my friend, my 'brother', my sports buddy and fellow fervent fan, my political ally and sounding board for my forays into the music world and beyond. You taught me some sound lessons (while driving me to the brink at times, of course), and I will sorely miss our long afternoon-into-evening talks about whatever moved us.
It is my honor to count you among my closest friends and I thank you for the kindnesses and concern you always showed for me, even as your own situation grew more difficult.
As I bid you a deeply fond farewell from this leg of the journey,'swing for the fences' somehow feels apt as you perhaps embark on a new quest that I can only imagine. I expect that your sense of wonder will carry you far in whatever new quest may lie ahead.
Thank you my friend for sharing your world with me. I count myself lucky indeed to have spent such treasured time with you along the way.
With dearest love, and with deep condolences to Luke, John, Jane, Rich, Matt and Sue, Ione, and the rest of the Evans family,
Al (a/k/a, Alice)

Hi Rich and family,
First of all my condolences.
It was sad news when I received Rich' brief email last Friday. And somehow unexpected too, as he was only for a short while in the hospice. But perhaps that's where he finally found his rest and peace. It's hard at the moment to think that this was the best and that's fine now, that will come over time. Now there is this empty feeling and missing this colorful person. Missing him will slowly fade away, but be sure you will never forget him. He will always be there in your heart and in your mind having all these great remembrances.
For now I want to wish you all the best and lots of strength in this difficult period.
Kind regards,
Anne Wijkstra and family
Rich' colleague from The Netherlands
