CHAPLIN BARNES Obituary

BARNES--Chaplin Bradford, of Westerly, Rhode Island, aged 73, died July 20th at his home in Westerly, RI. Educated at the Choate School, Yale, Yale Law School and University College, Oxford University, where he studied international law, he was a lawyer, a conservationist, and a local historian. A founding Director of the Watch Hill Conservancy and Watch Hill Lighthouse Keepers Association, President of the Watch Hill Chapel Society, he was the author of a history of Watch Hill, Watch Hill Through Time, and collaborating author of a history of Watch Hill architecture, Watch Hill Style. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Trowbridge, two daughters, Sarah Chaplin Barnes and Diana Brewster Barnes Bender, three grandchildren, two stepchildren, Andrew R. Sheriff of and Nathalie Sheriff Comstock and their children. Memorial Service, July 26th, at 10am, Watch Hill Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home and Hospice Care of RI.

The Town of Westerly Comprehensive Plan is greatly influenced by Chap's membership on the Advisory Committee and its weekly working sub-committee. Many sections-particularly with respect to identifying and preserving "community character"- were written of edited by Chap. His stewardship on this Committee and in the work of the Conservancy were infectious. I will miss his sage counsel.
