ROBERT DEANS Obituary

DEANS--Robert Barr, Jr. passed away peacefully on August 13th, 2014 at Glen Cove Hospital. Bob was born on April 9, 1925 in Buffalo, New York. He was the son of Robert B. Deans ("Sheriff") and Lucy Bemis Pomeroy Deans. His younger sister, Lucy Pomeroy Deans Hanes predeceased him in 1977. He grew up in New York City and Aiken, South Carolina and attended The Buckley School in New York and Aiken Preparatory School in South Carolina. In 1939, he entered St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire as a member of the Third Form and he graduated in 1943. Following his graduation from St. Paul's, he enlisted in the United States Navy V-12 officer training program in Rochester, New York and served on the west coast until the end of World War II. At the conclusion of the war, he enrolled at Yale University under the G.I. Bill and graduated in 1947 with a degree in economics. After his graduation from Yale, Bob worked for New York Trust Company, Fiduciary Counsel, and Lehman Brothers until 1951 when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. In 1952, he married Elisabeth DeBoeck Prickett in Wilmington, Delaware and started working for Chase National Bank. Bob and Elise spent several years in Vienna, Zurich, and Beirut where Bob was on loan to various foreign banks while working for Chase. They traveled extensively, had many extraordinary experiences, and made many long-standing friends. During this time, Bob and Elise were accompanied in their travels by their oldest daughter, Mary, and their two sons who were born abroad (Rob in Zurich in 1954 and Gil in Beirut in 1956). Bob and Elise returned to New York in 1957 and took up residence in Mill Neck on Long Island at "Turbillon" where he lived until his death. Upon returning to New York in 1957, Bob joined Van Strum & Towne and, while working there between 1957 and 1967, he earned an M.B.A. from New York University and had two more children (Nick in 1957, Elisabeth in 1960). In 1967, Bob and several close friends and colleagues founded Inverness Counsel. He worked there as Chairman/CEO until, in 2011, he assumed the role of Chairman Emeritus. Even in his role as Chairman Emeritus, Bob never stopped actively consulting with his fellow partners and advising his long-time contacts. His memberships included The Racquet and Tennis Club, The Creek, Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, Beaver Dam Winter Sports Club, the Boone and Crockett Club and, for a short time, the Colony Club. In 1963, Bob and his long-time neighbors and friends William T. Dunn, Jr. and Leonard L. Marshall, Jr. founded the North Shore Wildlife Sanctuary in Mill Neck and he served on the Executive Committee until his death. His first wife, Elise, pre-deceased him in 2001 and Bob was fortunate to spend his final years with his second wife, Shirley Blakeley of Livingston, Montana, whom he married in 2008. Bob is survived by his five children Mary L. C. Flood, Robert Barr Deans III (Janet), William Prickett Deans (Wendy), Nicholas Wyeth Deans (Barbara), and Elisabeth Suzanne DeBoeck Mooney. He is also survived by his grandchildren Caroline Whitney Deans and Robert Barr Deans IV (children of Rob and Janet), Katharine Hale Mooney (daughter of Elisabeth), and Jeremy Luke Frazier (step-son of Nicholas). He is also survived by an enormous extended family of friends and relatives with whom he interacted actively throughout his life. A private interment will be held at Valley Forge Memorial Chapel. A memorial service is scheduled for October 10, 2014 at 11:00am at Christ Church in Oyster Bay. In lieu of flowers, Bob has requested that donations be made to North Shore Wildlife Sanctuary (P.O. Box 214, Mill Neck, NY 11765).

Hello, I would like to add something, a glimpse of how we inspire and effect each other. I was Driving through Sea Cliff one afternoon, when I came upon a squirrel flopping around the curb so I picked him up and put him in a carrier cage that I keep in my trunk for emergencies on the road for small animals.
After a few calls I was directed to bring Theodore, (who I named after one of the Chipmunks on TV), to the North Shore Wildlife Sanctuary in Mill Neck. It was so beautiful to me that it brought tears to my eyes. When I came upon this I thought wow I'd love to meet the person or people who started this Sanctuary, the fact that they would go out of their way to help the Wildlife is so awesome, and even more so because, it is a sensitive topic and can get sticky legally, so I knew it had to be a very special person or people. Well I was so happy and proud to find out that Bob was on the list of founders. I wish I could personally thank them all including Mr. Marshal, and Mr. Dunn. I do what I can on a small scale to help the Wildlife, and I am inspired to do more by this. What a beautiful example to us all, and the roll off is that the animals will be treated better and cared for and the suffering reduced in the future. Now when I checked on Theodore he was getting ready to be re-released to his home habitat. I later on that year brought them a baby orphan deer with so many ticks in her eyes that she couldn't see me so I just scooped her right up! Happiness and Joy is what your going to find if we spend time with your family, I love you all so much, and praying fervently for you all, and hope to see you soon.

Dear Family of Robert, Dear Shirley, Mary, Rob, Gill, Nick, and Wizzie, I want to offer my condolences to you all and your families, I am deeply saddened of the news and agree with your friend who posted that he will be missed enormously. I had the honor and privilege to have worked for and lived with your family in my early days and the experience molded me into the person I am today. I have yet to meet a more loving family and as an RN I work and meet with many many families. I am an "animal lover" too and was so happy to see how a whole family could treat their pets as family and bring each other so much joy. Being a humble man we never spoke of all his accomplishments and Im not surprised by it, He took charge with grace, beauty and confidence. I was attending college while staying with your family and was able to obtain my nursing degree and I am eternally grateful for the kindness and generosity your family showed me, which I developed and passed on to my Daughter Miriahann, who is in her 4th year of college at age 21. I miss taking care of the horses and the chickens and playing with the dogs, and seeing Caroline chasing the chickens around when she was a baby. We never really lose people because they live in our hearts and stay with us forever, I feel Bob is at peace and I feel his Joy and Happiness, and see his beautiful smile on us. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families now and always. Our deepest sympathy goes out to you all and know that you are not alone. I pray that you feel deeply the Love and condolences being sent and offered in this time. Love Geri and Miriah Abbondandolo

Dear Shirley, Mary, Robby, Gilly, Nicky, and wizzie, et al,
Tish and I are writing on this site because we would like to communicate with all the members of the Deans family.
We are so sorry about Bobby and will miss him enormously. He was such a warm, generous, and special friend.
Our memories of him and your family are full of joy and go back at least half a century - to annual 4th of July parties in the fields with dogs, ponies and Sicilian cart rides - to cabana evenings at which we drank much too much delicious wine - to fabulous dinner parties in your charming, historic house, humorously accompanied by Sinbad talking non stop and by one of the Zulus begging for attention! - to our anticipation monthly of Mary's Wasatch Letter - to our joy of having known Elise whom we loved so much for her warmth and grace, for her originality, and for her sunny, unflappable temperament - and so much more.
We recall, as well, the support, both literal (crutches) and figurative that Robby gave to young Paula when she severed her achilles tendon on the squash court...leading us to express our hope that the Deans-Rand friendship will continue on and on through present and future generations.
And we have loved getting to know Shirley who has kept Bobby active and happy and whom we hope will continue to come back East to see all of her friends who care about her here.
We send you all our love and sympathy.
