LEONARD SOMMER Obituary

SOMMER--Leonard, of Teaneck, NJ and formerly of North Massapequa, NY died on August 15, 2014 at the age of 93. The oldest son of Fay and Solomon Sommer, he was born in New York City and raised in the Bronx where he attended DeWitt Clinton High School. After being graduated from City College of New York he served as a naval officer commanding landing craft in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following his War service he attended Harvard Law School where he became an editor on the "Law Review." His legal career of 60 years was spent at the law firm Milbank Tweed Hadley and McCloy where he was an associate and later of counsel specializing in securities law. While he found the practice of law and mentoring lawyers to be both stimulating and satisfying he especially enjoyed his four decade involvement in the annual shows at the firm which were performed by the Milkweed Mighty Arts Players. Mr. Sommer married the former Dr. Beatrice Scott in 1950 and together they raised their sons Richard and Charles until her death in 1991. He enjoyed reading, bridge, and music, particularly show tunes and standards. One of his most enjoyable activities in the past year was performing in the chorus at Five Star Residence in Teaneck where he lived. He was a lifetime supporter of his synagogue, Temple B'nai Torah of Wantagh, NY and its predecessor Temple Judea of Massapequa, NY. He is survived by his sons Richard of Glen Rock, NJ, Charles of Derry, NH; daughters-in-law Amy and Nancie; brother Ted; sister-in-law Yole, sister-in-law Janne; grandchildren Sharon, Sarah, Rebekah, and Hannah, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Jerry. Charitable contributions may be made in his memory to Temple B'nai Torah, 2900 Jerusalem Ave, Wantagh, NY 11793.
