Hugh and I were good friends with Paul (Griff) and Joan Garland in Scarsdale, NY. We were brought together originally by their sons Pat and John who were contemporaries of our sons Jeff and Scott. For many years Paul and Joan and the two of us spent pleasant times in each other's homes. One of the many interesting things about Paul to us was his pride in his heritage. As hugely successful in his profession as he was, Paul liked to talk about his ancestry in the Indiana (?) stone-cutting heritage. He honored those stonecutters. Thanks for giving us this opportunity to honor and remember him.

We Joneses of our hometown loved and lived by the Garlands for many years so they know how much we respected the whole family. There is always a warm spot for the Oak Lane home and late night (sometimes too late at night) basketball in the driveway. Godspeed Paul Garand.

It is with deep regret that I learned very belatedly of Griff Garland's passing over a year ago. I knew Griff as a fellow student at Yale for four years and admired both his sharp intelligence and great generosity of spirit. He was fun to be around and we enjoyed some truly memorable times. I regret that our ways diverged after college and especially that we lost touch as our careers took us in different directions. May his family draw some comfort in knowing that their loss is shared by classmates and friends from long ago.

From the far past: I first met Griff when we worked together as Bursary students in the Graduate School in our Freshman year. We were then roomates at Saybrook college in our sophomore year. And he invited me to his wedding to Joan; it was the last time I saw him, but there was some renewed contact by e-mail in the past few years. Now in my later years I regret the loss of contact and I have fond memories of our early life together. I see that the life he led is testimony to his intelligence and dedication to goals and to his tolerance and understanding. The best I can say is that I knew Griff and I liked and admired him. May he rest in peace and may his family know that I and many others admired him, too.
