PARK MCGINTY Obituary

McGINTY--Park.

On Friday, April 10, 2015, liberated himself from the final stages of a battle with cancer that he endured with courage and grace, and without bitterness. He was a man of many high-level accomplishments in a wide and varied field of endeavors, and was one of the most self-transformative of men. After studying Comparative Religion at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he earned a doctorate in Comparative Religion at the University of Chicago. He subsequently served on the faculty of Moravian College and of Lehigh University, where he resigned from a tenured position in order to attend Yale Law School. After earning a J.D. from Yale in 1983, he practiced law in New York City as an Associate at Richards & O'Neil and subsequently at Davis Polk & Wardwell. He left the practice of law in order to teach law at New York Law School. The author of several books and scholarly articles, he retired from academia and law to write fiction and to pursue a deep study of science and the natural world; these intensive studies eventually culminated in and influenced his full-time creation of art and the development of his signature style. His sculptures and paintings, often involving the intricate placement of hundreds of pieces of glass, beads and jewels, related to his sensualist nature and his vision of ecstasy in color, form and light. These intricate works were accomplished despite his having been born with only one hand. His will provides for a Foundation to preserve and promote his art. Of his many achievements, Park took significant pride in his overcoming a decades-long depression, which he triumphed over with therapy and anti-depressants, in his cultivating deep friendships, and in creating art. His abundant capacity for love and his generous spirit in his appreciation of others will be missed by those lucky enough to have known him. Park McGinty was born in Atlanta, GA, in 1943, to Dr. A. Park McGinty and Murray Smith. His passions included many profound loves and two marriages which ended in amicable divorces. He is survived by his many first cousins and friends.

Park was my law professor first, later a friend, and his influence was deeply felt. I always told him, and anyone who asked, that he was the finest teacher I ever studied under. We lived near each other in New York, by Central Park, and ran into each other often. He was a guest in my home and met my children. Park was one of the most interesting, introspective, and intellectual people I ever met. I truly valued our friendship and think of him often. Seth Singer

I was a student of Park McGinty at NYLS in 1992-93-94 and have thought of him often. Today I decided to do a search for him on-line and found his obituary. I am truly saddened by his passing but so happy that he pursued his passions and found his "center." He was one of the most intelligent and patient professors that I have ever had. RIP Prof. McGinty.

I took a wonderful comparative religion class with Park at Moravian College. He and his wife gave wonderful parties filled with much merriment. I always hoped I'd see him again, and now that hope is dashed. So sad...

Park was such a loving, generous person. He loved a good debate or discussion and we stayed up talking many nights on my visit to his home. He was full of enthusiasm for objects of beauty, it was fun to see him collect or create. I will miss you.
