STUART PERTZ Obituary

PERTZ--Stuart King,

of Rowayton, CT and Park Slope NY, passed away on Wednesday July 8, 2015 at his home. He leaves his beloved wife of 50 years, Jeanette, his two loving daughters, Eliza and Joanna, five devoted grandsons and his caring sister Marion Goodman. Born in Brooklyn, NY he was educated at Brooklyn Tech, UC Berkeley, Ecole des Beaux Arts Fontainebleau and Princeton University where he received his BA and MFA in Architecture. A Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Mr. Pertz also served as a member of the NYC Planning Commission and as Chairman of the Board of the University Settlement. He was a founding member of the recently resuscitated City Club of New York and an active member of the Century Club. An architect, planner and urban designer, Mr. Pertz designed housing for the New York State Urban Development Corp, developed zoning and urban design plans for Charleston SC, New Britain and Norwalk, CT and for Taiwan, China, Armenia and Kuwait City. As a partner at HLW, he created the strategic planning group for General Motors and projects throughout Europe. He was a Professor of Architecture and Planning and then Chair of the Graduate Program in Urban Design at Pratt Institute. Recently, he had been teaching the Sustainable Communities studio, a seminar on Implementing Advocacy and part of the now established program in Urban Placemaking and Management at Pratt's Graduate Program in Planning, of which he was co-creator. He was an inspiring and passionate teacher and lecturer who loved his students. A unique and creative individual with a great sense of humor, he was dedicated to creating communities that reflect people's needs and values. Stuart was generous of spirit with a driven love of learning, whose interest in how the world works never ceased. During extensive travels with his wife, Jeanette, over the last 25 years, he loved to record the world around him through sketches and watercolors of streets, plazas and architecture. His other love, ceramics - from beautiful simple pots to fantastical figures and animals, are illustrated in a wonderful little book called Creating Friends. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to his non-profit: the Stuart K. Pertz Center for Urban Placemaking, Inc., c/o McCanliss & Early LLP, Wall St. Plaza, 88 Pine St., NY, NY 10005. I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I first met Stuart when he took several hours to walk the length of the Coney Island Boardwalk with me (a virtual stranger) and offer his expertise on preserving it. He was incredibly generous with his time and energy. He shared his knowledge articulately. He was passionate. He followed through. He stood up for what he believed in, even when it was unpopular. He was charming, intelligent, kind and always fun to talk to. I am so glad I got to spend time with him. I'll miss seeing him in my neighborhood. Sending condolences and comforting wishes to his family. What a truly good man.

I met Stuart while working at UDC in early '70 (give or take a month). In 1979 he asked me to join him at HLW where I stayed until I retired in 2003. Too many good memories with him, his wife and children to articulate but suffice it to say he will never be forgotten. It was an honor and a privilege to know him.
