CARL SCHIEBLER Obituary
The New York Philharmonic deeply mourns the passing of Carl R. Schiebler, Orchestra Personnel Manager, on December 22. A former orchestral horn player and veteran of the 7th Army Symphony, Carl came to the Philharmonic in 1986 and became a guardian and mentor, beloved for his big heart and gruff voice. His constant care for the musicians' welfare made him a beloved and respected figure among the entire Orchestra, Board, and Staff, as well as by four Music Directors and guest artists over three decades. All will miss Carl's almost daily call: "Ladies and Gentlemen, on stage. On stage, please." We extend deepest condolences to his wife, Noriko; his children and grandchildren; his brother and sister; and his legion of friends

I was wondering this morning what had become of Carl and found this obituary. Sorry to not know or respond sooner. I remember him very fondly with my dad Joe Kleeman and Henry Loew talking and laughing. He was a good friend and appreciate him visiting my dad towards the end of his life. It meant a lot to him. I can imagine the three of them navigating the heavens together. It´s awhile ago but am sorry for your loss of such a nest man.

Carl Schiebler was my mentor throughout my 44 years in the Oregon Symphony but especially during my 20yrs as their Orchestra Personnel Mgr. I first met Carl a Orchestra Personnel Managers Conference held that year in Toronto, it was my 2nd day in the PM position, and he and Jimmy Chambers took me out for a drink and about 4 hrs later they told me I had been provided sufficient wisdom to get me through the tough parts of the job. That plus regular phone conversations over the years and additional OPMConferences made my life easy. Always a helpful gentleman. Missed. R.I.P.

I always felt that Carl gave the NY Phil and all who came into his world the best of professionalism and humanity. He could be tough but always honest, fair and caring in my experience.
His work speaks for itself and he is a huge loss to the inner workings of the New York Philharmonic. A first class gentleman.

Words are completely inadequate to measure the beauty (can't you just imagine Carl's laugh if he heard me apply that word to him?) of this extraordinary man. I treasure him and his memory.

I first met Carl as a young French horn student in 1974. As my teacher, Carl provided me wings to a musical career that I still enjoy today. He taught me much about music and life. Thank you to a man that understood excellence and passion for the art form! May his memory be a blessing to all.

I was an intern at the NY Phil in the early 90's. Carl took me under his wings and it was evident that not only was he beloved by all, but he knew more about what was going on at NYP than anyone ! I couldn't have had a better start in the orch business than to have worked with Carl. Rest in peace, Carl.

I met Carl Schiebler in Toronto my first day on the job as Orchestra Personnel Manger of the Oregon Symphony. He kindly took time to take me aside and gave me much needed advice on how to become the best possible PM in every situation all while continuing to be a performing member of the orchestra. He did not have to do this but this giant of a man did and I am forever appreciative. He discussed everything from how to avoid or resolve conflicts, moral issues, wearing dual hats of player and mgt., how to be fair, and most of all to be consistent in the business and ways to create a working environment which allowed musicians to be the artists they were, and even mundane things like attendance taking had it's pros and cons and solutions. Few people may remember but Carl was the first to computerize the NYPHIL's PM record keeping, payrolls, scheduling, and rotations as this new technology evolved, a real task in those early days. He was the one to call for reassurance if you encountered something and we all owe him huge gratitude for his wisdom and professionalism. Thank you for being, Carl.

Carl Schiebler and I first met when I took on the CEO role with the St. Louis Symphony in 1978.Carl left in 1986 to join the New York Philharmonic.
Our friendship continued until his death. I was to fly into New York to see him on January 7, 2017 but to no avail.
I loved this man greatly and will be forever touched by knowing him.
My thoughts are with Noriko who is a rock and then some.

Carl, you were my mentor and friend. The circle of personnel managers is small and there is a simpatico we share that no one else can truly understand. You took me under your wing and guided me when I was starting out, when you could have stood aloof with all your knowledge and expertise. You were my guiding star who cared about making this important position the best it could be. Rest in peace, my dear gentle giant, I will never forget you.

I fondly recall meeting Carl my first few days as marketing director at the St. Louis Symphony. He went out of his way to introduce himself and get to know me. Carl was a very kind, generous and funny man.

My first memory of Mr. Scheibler was back in 1974 when as a 9th grader lugging a heavy french horn several blocks from my home to a fancy house on a hill. Inside I met a wonderful man who taught me so mich about life: fighting for what is right; being true to myself; hard work pays off; not being afraid of anything; and unconditional love. He was a second father to me and I will miss him greatly. What is amazing is how he made so many others feel the same way! He was and is an angel who will continue to support us as we live each day remembering the many important lessons that he taught us. Peace to all that were lucky enough to know him, especially his family.

I am in mourning today after the loss of Carl, the rock and support of all the musicians of the New York Philharmonic. Carl always had our backs, whether someone was having medical issues, personal problems or just needed support. He was a pillar of strength. He was tough, stubborn, and at times profane, but would do anything for those he loved and fought for what he thought was right. He worked tirelessly for the musicians. He loved us, and the feeling was entirely mutual. He had a wonderful way with people and was quick to laugh. I will miss him more than I can say. I owe him so much. He touched the lives of so many. We will never forget him.

I met Carl when I joined the Philharmonic staff in 1995. Ever direct, demanding, strong, sage, honorable, wily, and fiercely devoted to the musicians and to justice as well as excellence, I hope I can pass on a fraction of what I have learned more from him. I will miss him, his colorful way of speaking, and his wisdom.
