JOHN FINNELL Obituary

FINNELL--John Francis, Jr.

"Jack," beloved husband to Mitsue, proud father of JP, Jacques, Derek and Tanya, brother to Warren, and devoted grandfather to Sean, Caroline, Ryan, Luke, John and Nathan, passed away June 2nd at his home in New York, NY, surrounded by family. He was 82. Born in Bayside, NY, Jack received his BA and law degrees from Harvard University. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army, Military Police, and was called back into active duty by the U.S. Army Reserves during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In his early career, at age 29, he served as Tax Commissioner of New York City under Mayor John Lindsay. A fierce advocate for racial equality and economic opportunity for all, Jack served on the election committee of Simeon Golar who ran unsuccessfully for Congress from Queens in 1984. Later in life, he built his own immigration practice and dedicated it to helping his clients have the opportunity to build a new and better life in the United States. Jack had an insatiable curiosity, a brilliant analytical mind in law and life, and a passion for lifelong learning. He studied everything from the Japanese language to music, martial arts, philosophy, film, and history. Always seeking insight into the true nature of humanity and how to live a purposeful life, he attended The School of Practical Philosophy with his wife, where they made many close friends. A gifted athlete, Jack earned a black belt in Judo, placing as a finalist in the U.S. National Judo Tournament in his age group in 1989 and 1991. Jack loved his family above all; his selflessness, kindness and generosity will be missed by everyone. A wake will be held on Thursday, June 8th at the John Krtil Funeral Home (1297 1st Avenue, New York, NY) between 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 9th at 10:00am at St. Jean Baptiste Roman Catholic Church (184 East 76th Street, New York, NY). A private burial will follow. Flowers are welcome. Please send them directly to the funeral home for inclusion in the services.
