PAUL WINDELS Obituary

WINDELS--Paul III.

Passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 4. He was on his way to ring bells at the graduation ceremony for the Kent School in Kent, CT, when he suffered a heart attack. Paul served as a Director of the United Nations Development Corporation from 1997 until 2006 as one of eight members of the fifteen member Board appointed by Governor Pataki. Between 2010 and 2013, Paul served on the Westchester County Charter Revision Commission as one of six members appointed by County Executive Astorino. Professionally, Paul practiced law in New York since 1983. He was associated with Brown & Wood in New York City from 1982 until 1989, a partner at Perry & Windels from 1989 through 2005, and a solo practitioner since 2006. He attended St. Bernard's School in New York City and Groton School in Groton, MA. He received his B.A. from Yale, where he majored in Ancient Greek, in 1979, and received his J.D. from Columbia in 1982. Paul was a founder and president of the Civil War Forum of Metropolitan New York, and a keen student of Civil War history. His other hobbies were English change-ringing, which he practiced in towers in North America and England, and sailing, which he practiced in his family's boat in Maine, Aquila. His parents were Paul Windels Jr. and Patricia Ripley Windels of New York. He is survived by his wife, Catherine, his children, Mary Catherine and Paul Jr., his brothers James and Patrick Windels, and his sister Mary Windels, as well as three nephews and many cousins. To honor Paul's memory, the family asks that you consider donating to two charities that were close to Paul's heart. The first is the Civil War Forum of Metropolitan New York, which he helped found, and which will use gifts to advance Civil War education. Donations can be sent in the form of checks made out to the CWFMNY, c/o Howard Rosenthal, 161-19 Horace Harding Expressway, Flushing, NY 11365. The second is the Civil War Trust, which preserves significant Civil War battlefields. Donations can be sent to Civil War Trust, P.O. Box 17686, Baltimore, MD 21297-1686, or through their website, https://www.civilwar.org/ Please make sure to indicate that gifts are specifically in honor of Paul Windels.

I knew Paul as an urbane, witty individual, and as a kind of person unique among his law school classmates. I am glad to see that he did well for himself, in life and family.

Paul was an old friend of my husband Bill and later a godfather to our son Jonathan. He was an amazing person who could pick up a conversation after a year's lapse exactly where we had left off. He was an amazing scholar, lawyer, father, husband and for our family a true friend. He will be missed

Paul was one of the most intelligent, interesting and compassionate people I have ever known. He was an "expert" sailor, capable of navigating his Aquila through fog with nothing more than a compass, a watch and a chart that included depth soundings. Paul was also an expert in American Civil War History, a subject that I have studied for decades. However, any discussion with Paul concerning the Civil War equated to a learning experience for me. This quality of man is genuinely rare and will be missed by many!

The Columbia Law School Class of 1982 celebrated its 35th Reunion this evening. It just wasn't the same without Paul. Condolences to his family.

Paul was a wonderful fellow: Erudite, witty, droll--and more.

He was a keen political observer, possessed of great insight into both the current scene and the overall human condition.

He leaves behind a wonderful family.

He will be greatly missed.

I worked with Paul on litigation in Connecticut some years ago. His integrity, intelligence and humanity were at a level beyond the norm. His sudden death comes with a strong sense of loss.

I'm at a loss for words and beyond saddened. I'll forever remember his last words to me, "Don't be afraid to take risks."
A tragic loss for all, especially his beautiful family. Cathy, Mary Catherine, Paul...you're in my thoughts and prayers.

I am beyond words at this news. Paul was an unfailingly patient teacher to me at Brewster and at Kent, and in more recent years a wonderful correspondent to me here in London, always reacting with great enthusiasm and support to my news of ringing at Foster Lane. He then organised the visit of young Andreas to our practice, and further, a trip headed by Matthew last autumn to St Giles in the Field. Getting an email from him was always like seeing the sun come out.

I will miss him more than I can say, and I can only imagine how those of you who knew him better must feel. Please know, Catherine and your beautiful children, how deeply Paul will be missed.

Paul was the kindest, friendliest, and most intelligent man. A person with a big heart and a strong mind. He will be missed by his fellow bell ringers, family, friends, and co-workers. Rest in Peace, Paul.

I had the great privilege of meeting Paul when I addressed the Civil War Forum of Metropolitan New York in 2014 and 2015. What a kind, gentle, learned soul. I am so terribly sorry to learn of his passing. He was one of those rare folks who left an indelible impression after just one or two meetings. May he rest in peace. Thank you, my friend. Until we meet again.

Even as a small child Paul was a sponge for knowledge and willing to share it with anyone. But seeing him prepare authentic food for his adoring children on Chinese New Years was to see pure joy. Cathy, Mary Catherine and Paul Jr: never was a man more devoted to his family and sharing the history of the world with them. I am so sorry for your sudden loss.

Paul and I had a great lunch two weeks ago and I scant believe he has passed. He was a loving father, a great intellect and a wonderful cousin. He left us too soon and he is already mised.

Paul III, a man whose scholarship was exceeded only by his gentle heart; A ringer, an intellect, a man of honor, and a beloved family man- growing up with you was a privilege; remembering you, always with a grateful smile.
