JOHN CHATFIELD Obituary

CHATFIELD--John Snowden,

died on Sunday, August 6th, 2017 in Rockport, ME. Born in Cincinnati, OH on January 26, 1933, the youngest of five children born to Elizabeth Wolcott Henry, of Philadelphia, and William Hayden Chatfield of Cincinnati. John graduated from St. Mark's School in Southboro, MA, in 1951, and Harvard College in 1955. Following his graduation, he served in the United States Navy as a Combat Information Center (CIC) Officer for two years on a destroyer, the USS Perry, after which he attended Harvard Law School. John then joined the Manhattan District Attorney's office under Frank Hogan, where he worked until 1966. He then spent time as an investment advisor at Train Cabot Associates, and ultimately as a commodities trader, an interest and career which he held for the remainder of his life. In his early years, John traveled far and wide, making trips with friends through Europe and all across Asia. An avid sailor, he continued making annual trips through his 70s, up the coast of Maine with friends to sail in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia on his beloved boat, a Concordia yawl named "Houri." John married Jane Mcintosh Sheldon, from Milton, MA, in 1974. He is survived by his wife and their three children; Jessica Chatfield of Middlebury, VT, Abigail (B) Chatfield of Brooklyn, NY, and Andrew Chatfield of Washington, DC; two grandchildren (Aldo Henry Howarth of Middlebury, VT and Jane Hayden Howard of Brooklyn, NY), and his sister, Helen Chatfield Black, of Cincinnati, OH, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

John was a good friend since we were kids together at camp. I know that all of his classmates and friends at Harvard will be as sorry as I was to hear of his demise. My sincere condolences to you Jane, and your family.

To the Chatfield Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
