Leonard Nadler Obituary

1922 - 2017
Dr. Leonard Nadler, a pioneer in the field of human resource development and a long-time professor at The George Washington University, died Oct. 12 in White Plains, NY. He was 95.
Dr. Nadler, who was born in New York City and received his doctorate in education from Columbia University, was widely credited with coining the term "human resource development," and became one of its premier thought leaders through his 11 books, more than 150 published articles and his 25 years of teaching graduate degree programs at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
His professional career included tours in Japan and Ethiopia with the U.S. Agency for International Development, participation in the creation of both the Job Corps and Head Start programs under President Lyndon Johnson, and consulting to corporate, business and labor organizations, as well as to United Nations agencies, in 33 countries.
Dr. Nadler was the first recipient of the Distinguished Contribution to Human Resource Development Award of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), and was named to the HRD Research Hall of Fame in 2001 by the Academy of Human Resource Development.
A long-time resident of the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., Dr. Nadler is survived by Zeace Nadler, his loving wife of 72 years and his long-time business and writing partner; by his sons Mark and Scott Nadler, and daughters-in-law Donna Nadler Gould, Kathleen Watson Nadler, and Jan Nadler; by eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. (He was preceded in death by his oldest son, David Nadler.)
A memorial service was held Oct. 15 at The Kensington, the residence where Dr. and Mrs. Nadler lived in White Plains. The family has requested that donations in Dr. Nadler's memory be made in his name to the American Civil Liberties Union.

I was graced by having Len as a professor and then dissertation advisor. I was very fortunate in being one of his last doctoral students to graduate. While perhaps unaware of it, he was there as a support and friend as I went through three major life transitions during that time. Len and Zeace were kind to all of us, arranging social events at their home and conferences we attended. Truly committed to the field of HRD, we lose a fantastic leader whose legacy is continued through the contributions of his students.
