PHILLIP BROWN Obituary

BROWN--Phillip W. Tate,

86, of Santa Barbara, CA, died at home on Sunday, November 19, 2017. Born January 21, 1931 in New York City to Aralene "Polly" and Phillip Brown, he graduated from The Hotchkiss School in 1949, Yale University in 1953, and the U.S.M.C. (2nd Lieutenant) in 1955. He worked as an executive at BBDO advertising agency in New York and later opened the Washington Nursery in Washington, CT. He helped found the Churchill School in New York City and the American Indian Archaeological Institute in Washington, CT, and chaired the board of trustees at the Rumsey Hall School in Washington, CT. He spent summers at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton and Columbus Beach Club in Indian River, MI. He was predeceased by his first wife Helene Kinnucan (1977), his second wife Nancy Burke (2006), and his son Monte Tate Brown (2015) of Montecito, CA. Tate is survived by his brother, Anthony C. Brown of East Hampton; a daughter, Daryl Brown Uber (Bruce) of New York City; another son, Dwyer Phillip Brown (Nancy Reynolds) of Saint Louis, MO; a daughter- in-law, Merryl Goodman Brown of Montecito, CA; a stepdaughter, Nicole Barry; and four grandsons, Dryden and Winslow Brown of Montecito, and Anson and Graham Brown of Saint Louis. Gifts in Tate's honor can be made to Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care of Santa Barbara. A memorial service will be held in Washington, CT in early January.
