I was in David's 1962 Kelston Primary School class, which was split between Standards 3 and 4. He was a year older then me, so he was in the latter, me, a year behind. The obituary probably wouldn't have even caught my notice if it hadn't been for the fact that shortly after that school year started, my mother asked me who was in my class. His was one of the names that I rattled off (of which I can now only remember a handful) and she said she knew his father - apparently our grandmothers were friends and, c. 1940, David's father, his brother and mother, went to stay at my grandparents' farm in Middlemarch. Of course I never mentioned this to David as it would have been, like, far too cute...
Anyway, he was one of the most considerate human beings I have ever met.
Indeed, far too young to depart this world.

David was one of the most helpful people I know as well as a great archivist and local historian. He will be very much missed by all of us.

We had our individual differing views on the tidiness of my work station, but nevertheless you were a colleague whose memory I treasure, especially since one of your last actions must have been writing your generous valedictory message on the occasion of my retirement. Go in peace.

Shortly after my wife and I moved to Wellington from Canada, in 2006, I met David early one morning when running around the bays. That led to a friendship over the years that we were there, and I especially enjoyed our regular weekday 6:15 AM runs, when we would meet up, and finish, at Te Papa, along with other Scottish runners. I was very saddened to learn of his passing, far too young.

Dear David,
Having finally reconnected after nearly 50 years I am sorry that we didn't get the chance to actually meet and share more of the stories in the space between. Many happy memories from Waikato, Blues News and 58 Great South Road, Newmarket. Even the window cleaning job I inherited from you.
May the long time sunshine find you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you,
Guide your way home.
