MATTIE TOLBERT SIMMS Funeral service for Mrs. Mattie Tolbert Simms, 71, of Auburn will be held at 12:00 pm Monday, January 18, 2010 at Auburn AME Zion Church with interment in Westview Cemetery. Pastor Stephen Faulk will officiate. Mrs. Simms passed Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the East Alabama Medical Center. She was a member of Auburn AME Zion Church where she used her leadership skills to advance the local church serving in countless capacities. She was one of the first inductees into the Auburn Zion Hall of Fame. Mrs. Simms contributed her talents to the needs of the Opelika District and the Alabama Conference as she served in numerous areas. She was a vital part of the community as she was affiliated with several organizations. Mrs. Simms was a graduate of Lee Training School. Her education was furthered at Tuskegee Institute and Meharry School of Nursing (earning a Bachelors of Science). She continued her education at the University of Buffalo where she earned a Masters of Science Degree in Nursing. For 35 years, she was employed by the Tuskegee Veterans Administration Hospital as a registered nurse. During her tenure, she held numerous positions. Following her retirement, she was a part-time adjunct instructor in Nursing for Southern Union State Community College. A family hour will be held Sunday at 5:00 pm. Her remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Survivors: three sons, Pierre Simms, Los Angeles, CA, Andre Simms and Lattrell Simms both of Auburn; a brother, Lindsey (Audrey) Tolbert, Auburn; a sister, Lenora Tarbert, Auburn; an aunt, Marie Tolbert, Columbus, GA; a devoted cousin, Rhonda (Willie Jr.) Tyson, Auburn; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
