John Kevin England(1956 - 2013)

KENTWOOD, LA. John Kevin England of Kentwood, LA, and formerly from Odessa, TX, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at his home. John was born in Bartlesville, OK, on May 3, 1956, to Lindon and Alena (Buckner) England. His family moved to Midland in 1963 and he attended school there until their move to Odessa, where he graduated in the class of 1974 from Permian High School. John attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock and worked the summers in the petroleum industry, often as a roughneck. He studied to become a geologist and was only a few credits short when he decided to join the US Navy.
He spent the next 21 years in the Navy and was stationed in California, Hawaii and Virginia, attaining the rank of E-6 as a Fire Control Technician First Class. He loved life aboard ship and traveling to far off places. He spent more than one half of his active duty time in a deployed status. He served aboard the USS Hewett and USS Hue City. He finished up his career with a stint as an instructor in Dahlgren, VA, teaching young sailors how to maintain and operate the Aegis computer and weapons system.
Upon retirement from the Navy, John moved to Louisiana, where he had previously purchased a home and several acres of land located near one of his sisters. He loved his property and meticulously maintained it, spending many long days clearing brush from under young pine trees so they could have a better chance to grow tall and strong.
Preceded in death by his parents, he is survived by his two sisters, Sharon Lynette Addison and husband Ralph of Kentwood, LA, and Patricia Anne Summerall and husband Dan of Corsicana, TX. He also is survived by his two loving nieces, Jennifer Jean Greenwood and her husband Chris of Denver, CO, and Sarah Danielle Schafer and her husband Nathan of Lapeer, MI. His great nephew, Avery Charles Schafer, and great niece, Skylar Danielle Schafer, will also miss the wonderful humor and laugh of their Great Uncle John.
John was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (4 times), Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation (2 times), Navy "E" ribbon (4 times), Navy Good Conduct Medal (2 times), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (2 times), Southwest Asia Service Medal W/1 Bronze Star, Armed Forces Service Medal, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (3 times), Navy Overseas Service Ribbon (2 times), Kuwait Liberation Medal, Navy Pistol (Expert), Navy Rifle (Expert) Ribbon, and the Global War on Terrorism Medal.
John will be interred in the DFW National Cemetery at a later date.
