DENVER CITY Funeral services for Robert Lee "Bob" Champion, 89, of Denver City, will be conducted Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at 11:00 A.M. in the Denver City Church of Christ with Brother Skip Rodgers officiating. Graveside services will follow on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at 11:00 A.M. in the Cottonwood Cemetery in Cottonwood, Texas, with services under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home of Denver City. Robert passed away September 23, 2013, in Denver City.
Bob was born on July 23, 1924, in Cottonwood, Texas, to Calvin and Alice Champion. He served in U.S. Army during WWII. Robert married Murl "Murt" Barnett on April 2, 1950, in Hobbs, New Mexico, who preceded him in death on October 19, 1998. He later married Lillian Ray Cloud in Denver City on August 7, 2001. Bob retired from El Paso Natural Gas after 37 years as a Plant Operator. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn and Claud Champion.
Bob is survived by his wife, Lillian Ray Champion; two daughters, Debbie Crowley and husband Bob of Houston and Deena Mitchell and husband Dale of Katy; a step-son, Jerry Wayne Cloud and wife Dora of Clayton, New Mexico; two step-daughters, Ann Richardson and husband Jerry of Denver City and Vicki Williams and husband Randy of Levelland; a sister, Viola Turnbough and husband David of Lubbock; 20 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Bob was loved by all and was an inspiration to many.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Ladies Auxiliary "Pink Pantry" c/o Yoakum County Hospital at 412 Mustang, Denver City, Texas, or the New Mexico Children's Home of Portales, New Mexico, at 1356 New Mexico Hwy 236, Portales, New Mexico 88130-9411.
