Janey Lindsey Obituary

RANKIN Janey Shackelford Lindsey died Friday, August 5, 2011 in Lubbock, Texas after sustaining injuries in an accident. She was born on October 17, 1938 in Marathon, Texas to parents Lyndell and Merle Gulihur Shackelford. She was married to DeWayne Lindsey for 57 years. She had four boys, Tom, Daymond, Bill, and Shane.

Janey grew up in Marathon, Texas with her siblings, Rowdy, Lois and Macky. On June 10, 1954 she married the love of her life, DeWayne Lindsey. The young ranching couple decided to start raising their own hired hands. Within five years, their first three boys were born. Eight years later, Shane entered their life. Married to a strong willed and hard working man, Janey jumped on board and helped DeWayne build their ranching operation. She was beside him every step of the way. Ranching in West Texas brought many hard times and challenges. However Janey never ran from a challenge, she met every situation head on with the hours and determination it took to get the job done.

Her boys were the pride of her life. She raised them to respect the value of hard work. Janey welcomed every friend her boys brought home. Before long, she was calling all of them her boys. Now being called one of her boys, did not necessarily mean male or female, everyone was one of the "boys." With this title came lots of love, lectures, chicken fried steaks, and tortillas. Legendary stories developed over working sheep and fun times at the Lindsey ranch. As these kids grew older, Janey's interest in them did not waiver. She still wanted to know about every aspect of their life, and to be there for every milestone they accomplished.

Janey was a resident of Upton County for 57 years. She served as an officer in the Upton County Water Board and Chamber of Commerce. For sixteen years she worked tirelessly on The World Champion Barbado Cookoff. Being a member of Eastern Star was a big part of Janey's life. She served in every capacity and was awarded a 50 year membership award.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at the Rankin Park Building. Officiating the service is Johnny Kidd of Odessa, and Tuffy Whitehead of Del Rio will be a special speaker.

Janey is survived by her husband, DeWayne of Rankin, Texas; son Tom and daughter-in-law Janet of Rankin, Texas, son Daymond of Flower Mound, Texas, son Shane and daughter-in-law Shelly of McKinney, Texas; and daughter-in-law, Denna of Rankin, Texas; ten grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Rowdy "Bubba" Shackelford and sister-in-law Helen of San Angelo, Texas, her brother, Mack Shackelford and her sister-in-law Marilyn of Marathon, Texas; sister-in-law, Barbara "Sissy" Fisher and husband James of Aledo, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lyndell and Merle Shackelford; her sister, Lois Farris; her son, Bill Lindsey; and her grandson, Anthony Windham.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the 'Running against the Wind' Memorial Scholarship Fund at the First State Bank of Rankin, P.O. Box 118, Rankin, Texas 79778.

I met Janey through my sister, Doris Taylor, back in the 80's. Janey became a Mary Kay Consultant in my Unit. Janey could sell anything because of her magnetic personality and contagious smile. However, it's my understanding that she rarely charged anyone for their cosmetics--she gave it away--classic Janey Lindsey. A great loss for all who knew her.

Janie was a wonderful woman with a beautiful smile, and she always had something nice to say. Anytime I saw her, she was always happy and her zest for life was obvious. Janie loved her family and devoted her life to them, and she could always be counted on to offer support and well-received advice. Rankin was blessed to have this lovely woman in their community, and she will be missed. May God bless her family who loved her so dearly.
