Nick Williams Obituary
ODESSA Nick Williams, age 62, passed peacefully into his Savior's arms with the love and support of his adoring family by his side on Friday, March 21, 2014. He was born July 9, 1951, in Childress, TX, to Arlon Joe Williams and Peggy Ileyn Compton Williams. He grew up in Memphis, TX, and graduated from high school in 1969 from Plainview High School. He graduated from Texas Tech University and began his banking career in 1972 with Lubbock National Bank as a commercial lender, and met his future wife while they both worked at the bank. In August of 1976, Nick and Susie married, and they moved to Odessa for Nick to work for State National Bank as Vice President of Commercial Lending. In 1981, he left banking to manage and become a partner in Commercial Radio Services, Inc., a mobile communications company which he continued to operate until 1992. He became a Director of Western National Bank in 1985. Nick purchased ownership in Southwest Commercial Capital Inc., which he operated until 2009, turning over the operations to his son-in-law, Brian. Beginning that same year he became President of the Odessa market for Western National Bank, and continued serving on the WNB Board. His expertise in finance led him to serve on many community boards over the years, including Odessa Housing Finance Corp., Odessa YMCA, Odessa Boys Club, Odessa Country Club, First United Methodist Church as a trustee on the Church Council, a Foundation Trustee and on the Finance Committee.
Nick is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Susan Green Williams; his daughters, Reagan Williams Whytlaw and husband Brian and Abby Williams Bishop and husband Josh, all of Odessa.
Our beloved "Daddy Nick" has four precious grandchildren he adored, Hadley Channing Whytlaw (8), Grady Nick Whytlaw (4), Mallory Grace Bishop (4) and Harper Ellis Bishop (8 months). He treasured sharing a birthday with Hadley and bringing donuts to the grandkids every Saturday morning. He was always in attendance at every school event and sports function and loved reading to them.
Nick had many passions in his life. Family and faith were at the top of his list and he excelled in both. He was proud of the women his daughters had become and the men they had married. He loved golf, reading, exercising, and traveling to many foreign countries and, in recent years, he completed the New York City marathon along with three other full marathons and several half marathons with his family cheering him on.
He is also survived by his older brother, Joe Williams and wife Jackie of Huffman, TX; younger sister, Cindy Williams McCoy and husband Terry McCoy of Sugar Land, TX; and brother-in-law, David Green and wife Loretta of Ft. Worth, TX. Nieces and nephews include, Jeremy Williams (Krista), JoLeigh Haupt (Rob), Justin McCoy (Ashley), Kelly Rainbolt (John), Justin Green, and Zachary Green (Natalie). His father and mother- in-law, Baird and Betty Green of Odessa are left to cherish his memory.
Our family would like to acknowledge the excellent patient care from UTSW Pulmonary Transplant Team of doctors including Dr. Torres, Dr. Kaza and Dr. Mohanka. Also, locally, Dr. Dar and Dr. Kadir were interested and instrumental in Nick's medical journey.
Services are on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at 2pm at First United Baptist Church, 415 N. Lee St., Odessa, Texas.
The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be sent to First United Methodist Church, 415 North Lee St., Odessa, TX, 79760, or West Texas Food Bank, 1008 E. 2nd St., Odessa, TX 79761.
