Kay was born in Pueblo, Colorado, on July 28, 1925, to Wray and Erlyce Nelson. Kay spent his childhood in Kansas, where his family worked in the wheat fields, and later moved to several different states as his father became an Underwood Typewriter salesman. On November 20, 1943, he joined the Air Force and completed flight training in a Sterman Aircraft. Kay told so many stories of his love for planes and life long memories of his time in training. He would entertain many with his wonderful stories of his days in the service. After his time in the Air Force, he returned back home to attend Sul Ross University, where he met and married the love of his life, Mary Lu Nearburg. They were happily married for 57 years. Kay joined his father in business, along with his brother, Noris, where together they owned Nelson Office Supply for 60 years. Kay was a proud member of CAF and Masonic Lodge. He loved to travel, fish and, most of all, enjoy times with his dear friends and family. He was a great craftsman and could make anything out of wood. Kay left a positive impression with everyone he ever met and was loved by all.
Kay is preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Mary Lu, son Mike and brother Noris.
Kay is survived by his son Larry, several nieces and nephews and many close friends.
