Texana Chilton Cates Obituary
ODESSA Our dear Mama, Texana Chilton Cates, has entered in through the narrow gate and is walking the streets of gold with her beloved Phil.
Mom was born in Lamesa, Texas to Roy and Jessie Lee Gordon Chilton on February 19, 1918 and was called to heaven on October 31, 2012. She graduated from Ackerly, Texas in 1947. She played basketball and softball for the school. Mom married our dad, Phillip Richard Cates, at her parent's home in Ackerly on June 4, 1941. They celebrated sixty one years of marriage together before his death, June 18, 2002. Mom was also a proud graduate of the licensed vocational nursing program at Odessa College and was retired from Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. She also worked at the Eyes of Texas Clinic for Dr. Sheets and as a granny for Grandy's.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, sisters, Alva Bingham, Bill Hurst, Othella Milam, and a brother Milton Paige. Also preceding her in death was her life long friend Wanda Nail and her favorite son, Cujo the poodle.
Mom had a great love and generous spirit for her family.
She is survived by her sons, Phil and his wife Barbara and Rick and his wife Anna, all of Odessa. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Christi Cates and her companion Nikki Wilson, Kim and her husband Tracy Clinkenbeard, Cari Cates and her companion Jeremy Deming and his son, Mason, Phillip Cates and his fiance Randi Stone, Mickey Appleton and wife Margie, Robin and husband Adam Jeffery. Her great grandchildren are Mandy and husband Wes Callaway, Missy and husband Landon Bailey, Wesley Appleton, and Isaiah Jeffrey; her great great grandchildren are Trinity, Brayden, and McKinnsey Callaway, Aiden Bailey and baby Bailey waiting in the wings but yet to arrive. She is also survived by her brother, James Roy Chilton of Lubbock and many cousins, nephews and nieces, and great friends. Also surviving is her great friend, and fellow resident of Parks Methodist Nursing Home, Martha Mae Carter. She greatly aided the family in taking care of Mom right up to the end. Thank you, Martha, and also the staff at the nursing home.
Mom was a former member of Temple Baptist Church and presently a member of First Baptist Odessa. While there she was a member of the keeping in touch (K.I.T.) group for seniors and Dr. Claussen's Sunday School Class.
Visitation with the family will be 6-8 PM Thursday, November 1, 2012 in Sunset Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for 2:30 PM Friday, November 2, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Byron McWilliams, of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
