ODESSA Mr. Donald Hammond, a resident for more than sixty years of Odessa, died Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Texas Specialty Hospital, Lubbock, Texas.|
He was born August 12, 1942 in Stamford, Texas to Mr. Willie Hammond and Mrs. Myrtle Johnson Hammond.
In 1952, he and his family moved to Odessa where he attended the schools of ECISD. He graduated from Blackshear Jr-Sr High School in Odessa and attended Tennessee State University. Later he attended Prairie View State College in Prairie View, TX.
He was a US Army veteran and a mason. For a time he worked for Shell Oil Company. Later he became co-owner of Lee Hammond, Inc., the family business, where he worked until his death.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie Hammond, Sr., and Myrtle Mae Morris; and three brothers, Leodis Hammond, Willie Hammond, Jr., and Wayne Hammond.
Donald is survived by his son, Kiari Jernigan; daughter, Donnetta Giles Potier of Houston; brothers, Aubrey (Denise) Hammond of Sacramento, CA, and Lee Roy (Jackie) Hammond of Odessa; sister, Myrtle Fae Hammond Webbs of Odessa; 3 grandchildren, Darrell Giles and Kendra Potier of Houston and Syn'Chaska "Choe" Moses of Odessa.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 11 AM at Mackey Chapel United Methodist Church with Pastor Darren Patrick officiating. Burial will follow at the Peaceful Garden section of the Ector County Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Martinez-Smith Funeral Chapels.
