Leland Douglas Lain Obituary
Video Memory
ODESSA Leland Douglas Lain left this world on the morning of July 10, 2013. He was born March 21, 1922, in Cleburne, Texas, to James and Fannie Lain, the oldest of three children, sister, Alice Kneblik and a brother, Gene, who died at age 8. He grew up in Cleburne, Texas. Upon graduating from high school, he worked for Southern Aircraft in Dallas until he joined the Navy in 1942, serving as an aviation metal smith on the USS Lake Champlain based at Norfolk, Virginia. He was honorably discharged in 1946. On a trip to visit an aunt and uncle in Goldsmith, he met Betty Miller, a striking brunet who charmed him from their first meeting and became the love of his life. Six months later on December 13 (Friday the 13th), they were married. This December would celebrate their 67th year of marriage. The couple lived in Crane, where Leland worked for Texas New Mexico Pipeline. In 1965 he purchased the Gulf Service Station in Penwell, Texas. After several years of operating the service station, Leland went into business with his father-in-law, Claude Miller. Together they owned and operated M & L Valve Service. There he worked for the next 28 years with his son and grandsons. Leland sold M & L Valve and helped develop Energy Equipment with his son, Larry, where they designed and built high-pressure test units. After semi-retiring from Energy Equipment, he and Betty began to travel. And travel they did. Leland enjoyed riding motorcycles, fishing and driving. He was a member of Sherwood Church of Christ.
Preceding him in death are his parents, sister, brother and son, Larry Lain. He is survived by his wife, Betty, a daughter, Nancy Campbell and husband, Jon; four grandchildren, Doug and Travis Lain, their mother Becky; Amanda and David Campbell, and his wife, Katherine. Leland was blessed with five great-grandchildren, Garrett and Greyson Lain, Tyler Lambdin and Colin and Jessica Campbell.
Family visitation will be Friday, July 12th, at 7:00 pm at the residence. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 13, at 2:00 pm. at Sherwood Church of Christ with Lynn Money and Mark Wilson officiating. In Lieu of flowers, please remember Leland with a memorial to Odessa Christian School, 2000 Doran Dr., Odessa, Texas 79761.
