Greba Brooks

Greba Brooks, 88, of Washington, went to be with her Lord Thursday, March 27, 2014, in Washington Hospital.She was born March 11, 1926, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Frederick and Florence Hopper Anderson.Mrs. Brooks was a 1944 graduate of Washington High School.She was a member of St. Paul AME Church since childhood, where she was very active on numerous committees. She was also active in church clubs, including the Busy Bees, and sang in the choir. She often sang solos during services and for special occasions. She even played Santa Claus at church.Mrs. Brooks was a trained, professional seamstress who was able to make anything with or without the aid of a pattern. It was often noted that her work looked as if it came from a high-end store. This was her special gift.She worked at The Meadows, as well as Sol Mintz Clothing, where she did alterations.Mrs. Brooks loved acting silly and making people laugh, playing bingo, playing Pokeno and going to the casino to sit at her favorite machine.She was a member of IBPOE Elks Lodge and was a top seller for Avon, Stanley Home and Mary Kay products.Her greatest joy was being a housewife and being home with her husband and four children, cooking dinner every day, baking and making snow ice cream. She also cared for her mother until her death.On June 2, 1949, she married Floyd Brooks Sr., who died September 25, 2002.Surviving are a son, Floyd N. Brooks Jr. of Washington; two daughters, Charlotte (Leslie) Thornton of Temple Hills, Md., and Phyllis Cushenberry of Washington; 11 grandchildren, Angela, Tammy, Keith, Eric, Javonda, Brandy, Jonice, Harry III, Justin, Katie and Dashawntae; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.Deceased are a son, Boyd "BB" Brooks; two brothers, Duane and Orlando Diggs; and a sister, Betty Diggs.Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the time of service, Saturday, April 5, in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, with the Rev. Joseph E. Wheeler officiating. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township.Condolences may be expressed at www.familyremembers.com.
