Dr. J. Frederick Scherrer, 89, of Upper St. Clair, died Thursday, July 3, 2014.
He was born July 3, 1925, in Pittsburgh, a son of Joseph G. and Anna Bernauer Scherrer.
Mr. Scherrer was the beloved husband of the late Ruth Lunette Scott Scherrer; loving brother of Connie (Roy) Benson; and dear cousin of Alice O'Brien.
He grew up in Oakland and was a graduate of Schenley High School. He served in the U.S. Army
Infantry during World War II
and was present during the landing in Normandy. He received two Purple Heart
medals and a Bronze Star
, and was later stationed in Paris with a military intelligence unit.
Mr. Scherrer received a bachelor's degree from Carnegie Tech in 1949, master's degrees from University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Tech and a doctorate from University of Pittsburgh.
He had a longtime association with Pittsburgh Public Schools as a teacher, principal, administrator and assistant superintendant.
He was also a member of the McMurray and Canonsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Funeral arrangements are by Beinhauers, 724-941-3211. Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at 2828 Washington Road, McMurray, PA 15317, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8. Interment will follow in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by McMurray VFW Post 764.
