Richard W. "Dick" Canan, 77, of Pelham, Ala., died at 12:05 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2014.He was born May 16, 1937, in Waynesburg to the late Glenn W. and Nelle Morris Canan.Mr. Canan was an avid bridge player. He was a member of Birmingham Bridge Club; an active member of Masonic Blue Lodge of Hoover, Scottish Rites and Shriners; and member of Loyal Order of Moose. Mr. Canan loved life and entertaining. He was a good vocalist, singing with Judy Johnson's karaoke group and enjoyed ballroom dancing until the past couple of years. Mr. Canan had few equals when it came to storytelling. He was a real raconteur and relished convincing listeners of the veracity of his tall tales.Surviving are his sister, Betty Carol Canan, with whom he lived; a brother, Neil M. (Phyllis) Canan of Waynesburg; a niece, Deborah Canan (Evan) Ross and their children, Brody and Mia Jo, of Jefferson; a nephew, Brad E. (Roberta) Martin of Pataskala, Ohio; an aunt, Betty Morris Scott; and several cousins.Mr. Canan cherished and nurtured friendships, and leaves many good and faithful friends to cherish his memory. He was a member of Mountain Top Community Church, Vestavia, Ala., and Oak View United Methodist Church, Waynesburg.A Celebration of Life was held Monday, June 9, in Alabama.Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, in Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Homes Inc., 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg, PA 15370, Daryl L. Throckmorton, owner/director, where additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., the hour of service, Thursday, June 12, with the Rev. Robert Bedison officiating. Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Scottish Rite Shoe Program, P.O. Box 101235, Irondale, AL 35210. This is a worthy program that Mr. Canan was devoted to serving.
