Bill was my dear colleague and we had countless wonderful talks about Latin teaching and our Latin students over many years. I thought I would post here what is on the Hunter College website.

The flurry of emails in the interests of writing about him right after Bill passed away was its own tribute to him. People were sharing stories and information and it was a lovely way to connect with other classicists in his memory. My condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and former students.

Mr. Mayer was my first Latin teacher at Hunter College. I wouldn't be a Latin teacher today without his encouragement and support.
My deepest condolences.

Bill was a wonderful scholar and was so willing to share his knowledge with others. I met him through the American Classical League Summer Institutes when I started looking for ways to connect with experts to incorporate Latin in my elementary classroom. Bill was highly respected by the Classics community. He was inspiring, helpful, and supportive to me. I discovered that he was one of the first Classicists to train teachers of other disciplines about incorporating Latin across the curriculum through the Excellence Through Classics program called the Classics Club. I got involved in promoting the program which was revived a few years ago. Bill was happy to share the history of Classics Club. His enthusiasm helped fuel my interest and involvement in the Classics and I will always remember his kindness. His memory will live on through the work that he started and all that he shared. He will be missed.

There are many memories of Bill that go back to the '80's when we first met at a CAES meeting in Buffalo. He contributed so much to the study of the classics and to everyone. He will always be remembered for his giving spirit.
