Joseph P. Ames, 90, of Washington, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014, in Washington Hospital.

He was born June 6, 1923, in Waynesburg, a son of the late George and Kathryn Murray Ames.
He was a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School. He earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering from Washington & Jefferson College.
He was owner and proprietor, along with his late wife, Margaret, of McNary Jewelers in Washington for 68 years. He loved horses and Frank Sinatra's music.
On January 17, 1953, in Toronto, Canada, he married Margaret Rose Pickett, who died June 8, 2012.
Surviving are a son, Paul M. Ames of Washington; two daughters, Margaret Ames and Mary Elizabeth DeWitt, both of Washington; six grandchildren, Raeanna and Casey DeWitt, Lindsay and Dylan (Karen Riley) Ames, Nicole Rathnaw and Meghan Waddle; two great-grandchildren, Brennan E. Rathnaw and Cassidy Ames; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are four brothers, George, Charles, Regis and Cyril; and two sisters, Elizabeth Ames and Katherine Munroe.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, March 21, in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Roman Catholic Church, Meadow Lands, with the Rev. Carmen A. D'Amico as celebrant. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Township. Memorial contributions may be directed to Miraculous Medal Church, 300 Pike Street, Meadow Lands, PA 15347.
