Salt Springs - John Robert Simms, 84, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 in his home at Salt Springs, Florida.
He was born in Orlando, Florida on March 19, 1929 to Alice Rose Kolb Simms and Robert Wesley Simms. He grew up in Clermont, Florida and graduated from Clermont High School in 1947, where he lettered in all sports.
He married Phyllis Marilyn Alban in 1948, and their union was blessed with a daughter, Sharon. John worked in the family business, Clermont Hardware & Supply, Inc. during his early working life. He had a second career as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a volunteer fireman, an active Elks Club member for 59 years, and a member of the National Rifle Association.
John enjoyed hunting and fishing, boating and water skiing, and loved the company of others. He and his companions, including his second wife (Beulah Hoffpauir, deceased), traveled widely in the U.S., enjoying the natural beauty of America.
John was a kind-hearted, generous friend, and beloved father and grandfather. He loved to regale his family and friends with tales of his many adventures. He will be greatly missed for his easy smile, warm welcome, and great generosity.
He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Simms Dame (John) of Gainesville, FL; six grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren; as well as his sister, Donna Rae Simms Hutchingson (Norris L.) of Clermont, FL; two nieces and a nephew.
