MAYS, WILLIAM HOWARD
Ocala - On May 6, 1925, William Howard "Buddy" Mays was born to Cyrus and Annie Mays in Miami, Florida.
He attended Belleview Santos and the New York City Police Academy. Deacon Mays accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Amity Baptist Church, Jamaica, New York.
He later joined Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, assisted in Baptism and faithfully taught Sunday school. He later joined the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church Family and resumed the same duties and responsibilities. He loved the Lord and his church and he was a faithful member of Calvary and New Zion.
He joined the United States Navy in 1941 and served his country well for four years. He served in World War II, he was stationed in Hawaii and made rank of Seaman 1st Class and he received the Pacific Theater Award for his service.
He later continued to serve his communities as a New York City Police Officer for 22 years, as a supervisor for the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center for ten years, and also as a Marion County Public School System bus driver.
He leaves to cherish his beautiful memories, his devoted daughter, Sandra Gilmore; James Gilmore, son-in- law; devoted son, Jamie Mays; William Mays, II (deceased); grandchildren, Tangela Smith, Joy Colon husband Tito, Tina Hill, Scott Mays wife Megan; ten great grandchildren; two sisters, Mamie L. Lee, Louvenia Mays. He was preceded in death by six brothers: Rev. Tony, Richard, James, Elroy, Cyrus and Robert Mays. Two sisters preceded him in death: Julia and Lillie Hope and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral Services For Mr. William Howard Mays "Buddy" 88, retired police officer will be held on Saturday June 15, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 728 Northwest 6th Avenue Ocala, Florida 34475 with the Reverend Bruce Chapman, Pastor conducting the Services Interment will be in The Burrell Cemetery, Santos, Florida under the care of Summers Funeral Home, 2238 Northwest 10th Street Ocala, Florida 34475, (352) 351-0566.
Public Viewing will be Friday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday at the Church 10:00 a.m. until time of Service. No viewing after the Eulogy.
