The Rev. Charles Wesley McCleery, 73, of Summerfield, died Monday afternoon, January 13, 2014, at Ocala Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family.
He was born November 12, 1940 in Van, Pa., son of the late Rev. Marshall and Lovedy McCleery. He married Lela Belle Ginter on August 19, 1967. He was a 1958 graduate of Titusville High School in Titusville, PA., and a 1962 graduate of God's Bible School in Cincinnati, OH, earning a BA degree in Greek and Religion. In 1958, he and several others banded together to organize the Evangelical Wesleyan Church of North America. He pastored numerous churches in north western PA and NY.
Through the years, Rev. McCleery served in several other capacities. He was an instructor and president of Adirondack Bible College in Northville, NY, an instructor at John Fletcher Bible College in Axtell, NE, and the administrator of Corry Area Christian School in Corry, PA. In 1988, he was ordained priest in the United Episcopal Church of North America. He served as priest at St. James Anglican Catholic Church in Erie, PA, and most recently as rector at The Church of the Resurrection Anglican Catholic Church in Ocala, FL.
Survivors include two sons, Patrick W. McCleery and wife, Jessica of Ocala, FL. and Michael W. McCleery and wife Rebecca of Kissimmee, FL.; a daughter, Suzanne L. Wyland and husband Keith, of Ocala, FL.; eight grandsons; a brother, George H. McCleery and wife Cheryl of Northville, NY; a sister Carolyn M. Sperl of Williamsville, NY, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his daughter Darla Leigh McCleery.
A funeral service will be held at noon on Monday, January 20, 2014 at the First Christian Church, Ocala, FL. A visitation of family and friends will be held from 2-4 pm on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, Belleview FL.
