Ocala - Dewey L. Franco, 85, passed away on August 31, 2012, at home. Dewey was born in Lansing, Ohio, on October 15, 1926, and was a resident of Ocala since 1972. He was a bookkeeper and accountant, and owned his own accounting business in Michigan before moving to Florida in 1969.
Dewey was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and the Korean War, receiving a Purple Heart for injuries received in service. He was very active in the Jaycees for many years, and became a member of the Exchange Club of Ocala in 1973. He served in many capacities, including secretary, treasurer and president. He also was a committee chair for major projects, such as Freedom Shrine, Book of Golden Deeds and Blue & Gold Award. Dewey was also treasurer of the Florida District Exchange Clubs from 1990 to 2005. In 1988, he received the Exchangite of the Year award for the Exchange Club of Ocala and the Florida District Exchange Clubs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters. Dewey is survived by his wife, Karen; sons, Michael (Marjorie) Franco, Craig (Cheryl) Franco and Harry (Julie) Wheeler of Ocala, Ken (Elizabeth) Franco of Jacksonville; daughters, Debbie Franco of Gainesville, Gail Crandall of Wooster, Ohio, and Debbie Kubis of Lauderhill, 14 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home, 9185 NE Jacksonville Rd., Anthony, Florida. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Marion County or United Ostomy Association of America.
