Ocala - John H. "Sonny" Payne went to the Lord peacefully, July 4, 2013 with his family present. John was a great man who loved God, his family and his country immensely. John was born in Memphis, Tennessee October 11, 1929. He was married his childhood sweetheart, Joyce, on July 7, 1950. His children were the joy of his life.
They had four children: Karen (Jim) Stein, Mark (Deborah) Payne, Phyllis (Steve) Gray and John (Maria) Payne. From these children he was blessed with six grandchildren: Sunne (Mike) Keith, Blaine (Laura) Stein, Randy Randle, Lynzi Payne, Bryce Payne and Kendyll Payne. There are also three great grandsons; Kaiden and Kolby Keith and Grady Stein.
John served in the U.S. Army and was a combat veteran of the Korean War. After his discharge he became a salesman and retired traveling the state of Florida selling rollers to newspapers. John never met a stranger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Payne, Sr., Bessie Huckaby Payne, his sister, Dorothy Newman, and brother, Bobby Payne.
Some of his greatest joys were serving the First Baptist Church as a Deacon and was elected by the deacons as a Deacon for life. He was one of the original starters of the "Handymen" group at FBC Ocala. He was active with his church in Memphis, including the church sponsored Boy Scout troop, and was responsible for building a Scout House.
Services for Mr. Payne will be held at 11 AM Monday, July 8, 2013, at First Baptist Church, 2801 E. Maricamp Road, Ocala, with Rev. Clarence Duncan and Rev. Kevin Kite officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memorial Park.
