Silver Springs - Ray Abbert Smith, 61, of Silver Springs, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2013 at his home following an extended illness. A native of Grandin, Florida, he resided in Marion County since 1994 coming from Fitzgerald, Georgia.
Ray served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After 17 years of service with the Fitzgerald Police Department, he retired due to a gunshot wound received in the line of duty. Ray had also worked as an A/C and refrigeration repairman. He was a member of VFW Post #9986 and Moose Lodge #2552, both in Astor, was past president of the Eagles Club Aerie #4216 in Silver Springs and had also been a Mason and Shriner. Ray enjoyed playing poker (Texas Hold'em), fishing and taking apart and fixing appliances.
He is survived by his wife of four years, Linda E. Smith of Silver Springs, his mother, Mary Scaff of Palatka, a brother, B.J. Smith and wife Jeannie of Cocoa, FL, two sisters, Linda Smith and Sandy Smith, both of Palatka and his beloved dog "Smoky Joe".
Services will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka with Pastor Eddie Stith officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Oak Hill West Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday at the funeral home from 1:00 P.M. till the time of services.
