Ocala - Thomas" Tommy" Theodore Akins, 93, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013.
He was born October 22 in Jacksonville, Florida to the late George and Sarah "Rae" Akins. He graduated from Andrew Jackson HS in 1939 and later from Jones Business College. He served in the US Army during World War II as a Warrant Officer in the elite First Special Service Force. He then was employed by Eastern Airlines and retired in 1982. During retirement he joined the First Coast Banjo Band in Jacksonville, Florida and enjoyed the friendship of many wonderful people. He was a man of high integrity and great honesty in both his business and personal life. He recently resided at Brentwood Assisted Living to be near family and was surrounded by caring staff and friends.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Stuart Millar Akins and sister, Charlotte A. Hurst.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Celest Akins; children, George Stuart (Jan) Akins, Faye Akins Moseley, Walter Allen (Patti) Akins; ten grandchildren, several great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Linden Cemetery in Linden, Florida.
