SCHAFFENAKER,
WILLIAM L. (BILL), 92
Ft. McCoy - Bill Schaffenaker, 92, of Ft. McCoy passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Estelle's Hospice House. He was born at Capon Bridge, WV on March 17, 1922, the son of Frank and Bessie Himelright Schaffenaker. He was the youngest of six children, two brothers and three sisters, all of which predeceased him many years ago. Bill's loving wife, Mary Ruth, passed on January 13, 2004. Her remains are in a niche at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL, with the space next to her reserved for Bill.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in WWII and flew 62 bombing missions in the European Theatre as a radio operator-gunner on the Martin B-26. Discharged in 1945, he once again returned to the Air Force for thirteen months starting in 1950 and the Korean conflict but saw no combat this time. Bill was a member of the Elks, American Legion and Past Commander of the VFW Post at Salt Springs, FL.
It was his choice that no ritual or services be performed. Bill's family and friends would like to thank the staff at Estelle's and Dr. Ronald Spencer for their excellent care for him. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Marion County, PO Box 4860, Ocala, FL 34478.
