Ellmann, Norbert L.

September 6, 1917 -

October 11, 2013

Norbert Leonard Ellmann passed away peacefully at home on the evening of October 11, 2013, with his wife and family members by his side.

Norbert ("Norb") was born in Oconto, Wisconsin, to Katherine Ford Ellmann and Herbert Ellmann. He graduated from Carroll University, served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and earned an MS in mathematics from Marquette University. He taught mathematics at Marquette and the Milwaukee School of Engineering before moving to California in the early 1950s, to work as an engineer at the Douglas Aircraft Company, now part of Boeing. In 1970, Norb returned to his passion of teaching and had a fulfilling career as a math professor at Long Beach City College.

Norb enjoyed black and white photography, words, beer, crossword puzzles, and history. He discovered a passion for cooking, creating legendary spaghetti sauces, potato pancakes and a host of other delights. Norb will be remembered for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, intelligent discourse, charming stories of small town Oconto life in the '20s and '30s, the twinkle in his eye as he kidded those he loved, and his abiding affection for his family.

Norb was married to his lovely wife, Mary Hawkes, for 56 happy years. He is survived by Mary and their four children, John (Sheryl), Steve (Elizabeth), Mary Tang (Robert) and Susie Spitz (Marc), and grandchildren: Henry, Jane and Clara Ellmann, Daniel and Katie Tang, and Alina and Kieran Spitz. He is also survived by his brother, Paul Ellmann, Green Bay; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass and burial was held on October 16, 10:00 a.m. at Christ Cathedral (formerly Crystal Cathedral) in Garden Grove.
